Why timing is the biggest decision in a China trip
China spans tropical Hainan and Siberian Harbin, so "what is the weather like" has no single answer. What does have an answer is the timing question: mid-September to mid-November is the best window for most of the country, with late March to May a close second. October is the single most reliable month almost everywhere.
Three holiday weeks override everything else, because transport and hotels sell out regardless of conditions: Lunar New Year (16-23 February 2026), Labour Day (1-5 May) and National Day Golden Week (1-7 October). The week from 8 October is the best-value window of the year.
The full month-by-month and region-by-region breakdown is here: Best time to visit China (2026) — it covers the two national windows, thirteen regional calendars, and which weeks to avoid for Harbin, Sanya, Tibet and the far west.
| If you are going to... | Go in |
|---|---|
| Beijing, Xi'an, Shanghai, Guilin, the east coast | Mid-Sept to late Oct; late Mar to May |
| Harbin for the ice festival | January |
| Sanya and Hainan | November to April |
| Tibet | Mid-April to late May; Sept to late Oct |
| Xinjiang and the Silk Road | September |
| Yunnan | March to May; Sept to November |
Common questions
What is the best month to visit China?
October, for most of the country — dry, clear, comfortable and with the best light of the year. Avoid the first seven days, which are the National Day holiday and the busiest week of the Chinese year apart from Lunar New Year. From 8 October onward you get the same conditions with far fewer people.
Should I avoid travelling during Chinese holidays?
If you can, yes — especially the Lunar New Year week, the first week of October, and 1-5 May. Trains and hotels sell out weeks ahead, attractions hit capacity, and prices spike. If your dates are fixed, book rail and accommodation as early as the systems allow.
Does winter make a China trip a bad idea?
Not in the south, where November to April is the dry season and the best time to be there. In the north it is cold but visitable, with low crowds and low prices. The problem with winter is a multi-region itinerary, because you end up packing for two climates.
