Short answer
The fastest high-speed trains from Beijing West to Chongqing North cover the roughly 1,900 km in about 7 hours. Published schedules for the corridor list travel times from 6h 45m up to around 9 to 10 hours, depending on how many stops a given train makes.
Conventional overnight trains run the same corridor and take about 24 to 26 hours. High-speed sleeper sets have also operated here with evening departures from Beijing and morning arrivals in Chongqing, cutting the overnight version to roughly 14 to 16 hours. Sleeper services get reshuffled, so confirm on 12306.
Tickets open about 15 days before departure and sell down fast around holidays. The passport you book with is the ticket, and the station name on your booking decides which side of Chongqing you wake up on.
Three ways to make the trip
The Beijing–Chongqing corridor has more variety than most: a daytime high-speed run, a conventional sleeper that costs a full day, and a small number of berth-equipped high-speed sets that try to split the difference.
| High-speed (G) | High-speed sleeper (D) | Conventional (Z / T / K) | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Journey time | About 7h fastest; up to 9–10h | Roughly 14–16h overnight | About 24–26h |
| Departure | Beijing West, daytime | Beijing West or Beijing Fengtai, evening | Beijing West or Beijing, various |
| Arrival | Chongqing North, some Chongqing West | Chongqing West or Chongqing North, morning | Chongqing North and Chongqing West |
| Seating | Second, first, business class | Berth compartments, plus some seated cars | Hard seat, hard sleeper, soft sleeper |
| Best for | Most visitors | Arriving rested without spending a whole day | Lowest fares |
Numbers in that table are typical ranges from published schedules, not a fixed timetable. Train numbers change with each revision, and the app shows what is actually running on your date.
Stations in Beijing
Beijing West (Beijingxi) is the main long-distance hub and handles most of the Chongqing departures. Metro lines 7 and 9 stop beneath it. Security screening happens at the entrance, so budget an extra 20 minutes on top of your own travel time.
Beijing Fengtai is the new southern terminal on metro lines 10 and 16. Some evening services, including sleeper-equipped sets, have left from here. Fengtai and Beijing West are about 8 km apart and share nothing except the word Beijing.
Beijing station itself is a third possibility for conventional trains and sits next to the old city, on metro line 2.
Stations in Chongqing
Chongqing is a city built over hills, and its stations are not interchangeable.
- Chongqing North (Chongqingbei) — the main high-speed arrival, on metro lines 3 and 10 and the Loop line. Jiefangbei and the Raffles area are around 9 km south, 25 to 40 minutes by taxi in traffic.
- Chongqing West (Chongqingxi) — a large newer terminal on metro line 5 and the Loop line, further out from the centre. Several high-speed and sleeper services use it.
- Shapingba — a convenient central option when your train stops there, right beside the Shapingba metro interchange and the Ciqikou area.
Booking a hotel first and checking the arrival station afterwards is the standard mistake on this route. The station guide explains how the Chinese signage, platform numbers and exit letters work.
Journey times, and why the range is wide
A 6h 45m run and a 10-hour run are both plausible on the same day. The difference is stop count and which section the train uses, not a fault.
The fastest departures come in the morning and late afternoon. Slower trains leave at similar times but pick up more intermediate stops, adding a couple of hours across a 1,900 km line. If you are meeting someone in Chongqing, book by arrival time rather than by departure time.
High-speed fares on this corridor are published in the several-hundred-yuan range for second class on the fastest trains, and a conventional sleeper berth costs well under that. Both are demand-priced and class-dependent, so treat any figure as indicative and read the real one on 12306.
Seat classes that exist here
| Class | Layout | Practical note |
|---|---|---|
| Second class (G) | 3 + 2 | Standard seat, socket at the seat, the default choice |
| First class (G) | 2 + 2 | Wider seat, quieter carriage, noticeably more expensive |
| Business class (G) | 1 + 2 | Lie-flat seating on some sets, several times the second-class fare |
| Sleeper berths (D and conventional) | Closed compartments or open bays | Soft sleeper is the 4-berth compartment; hard sleeper is the 6-berth open bay |
| Hard seat (conventional) | 3 + 2, no recline | Cheapest and hardest option for a 24-hour trip |
Berth layouts vary between train sets. What is offered on the specific train you book shows in the app at the time of sale — see the seat classes guide for the details behind each class.
Booking with a foreign passport
The official channel is the 12306 app or its English website. A foreign passport works as the identity document, and the passport number becomes the ticket.
- Register earlySet up the account and enter your passport exactly as printed, including middle names. Verification for foreign passports sometimes needs a counter visit once you are in China, and doing that on arrival day is easier than at 6am on departure day.
- Know your date's opening timeThe standard pre-sale period is 15 days. Popular trains on this corridor empty quickly around national holidays, Spring Festival and the summer peak.
- Book the arrival station you wantChongqing North and Chongqing West are different endings to the same trip. Check the ticket before you choose a hotel.
- Pay and keep the confirmationPayment inside the app books the seat immediately. Save the order number and the train number somewhere offline.
- Board with the same passportThere is normally no paper ticket. The passport is scanned at the station gate and again at the platform check.
Plans change: the rules for rebooking and refunds are in our refund and change guide, and every nuance of the buying flow is in the train ticket guide.
On board for seven hours
Seven hours is a good stretch of travel, but a high-speed train is a comfortable place to spend it.
- Food. A trolley service and a dining car sell rice boxes, noodles, snacks and drinks at marked-up prices. Hot water dispensers at the carriage ends are free, which is why instant noodles are the national train meal.
- Power and data. Sockets at every second-class seat, usually under the seat or on the seat back. Mobile signal holds up for most of the run but drops in the tunnelled sections.
- Luggage. Overhead racks plus larger racks at the carriage ends. No weight charge, but the luggage rules list what security will refuse.
- Arrival. Announcements are in Chinese and English on most sets. The platform exit leads straight to metro signage in both Chongqing terminals.
Which option to pick
If Chongqing is the destination and you have the day, take the morning high-speed train and arrive in time for dinner. That is the orthodox choice and the one that costs the least in total.
If you want the overnight version, the sleeper set is the compromise worth checking: you leave in the evening and arrive in the morning, and the berth is the ticket, so no separate hotel night. Its timetable is the part to verify, because these services move between corridors.
The conventional 24-hour train only wins on price, and it takes most of two days of a trip to do it. On a route with a 7-hour alternative, that is a hard trade.
Frequently asked questions
How long is the train from Beijing to Chongqing?
The fastest high-speed trains do the trip in about 7 hours, with slower departures running up to around 9 or 10 hours. Conventional trains take roughly 24 to 26 hours, and the overnight high-speed sleeper services that have run on this corridor sit around 14 to 16 hours.
Which station does the train arrive at in Chongqing?
Most high-speed trains from Beijing arrive at Chongqing North, with some using Chongqing West and a few stopping at Shapingba. The stations are several kilometres apart and sit on different metro lines, so check the arrival station before booking a hotel or a taxi.
Is there an overnight train from Beijing to Chongqing?
Yes, in two forms: conventional Z, T and K trains that take roughly a day and a night, and high-speed sleeper sets that have operated on this corridor with evening departures from Beijing and morning arrivals in Chongqing. Sleeper services are frequently rearranged, so confirm the current operation on 12306 for your date.
How far in advance can I book a Beijing to Chongqing ticket?
The standard pre-sale period is 15 days before departure, with sales until about 30 minutes before the train leaves. The window is set by China Railway and can change, so check the 12306 app for the exact opening time of your travel date.
Can I book with a foreign passport?
Yes. Foreign passports are accepted on the 12306 app and the official English website, and the passport number is tied to the ticket. Register and verify before departure where possible, and arrive at the station 45 to 60 minutes early if your identity verification still has to be completed in person.
What seat classes are available?
High-speed G trains offer second class, first class and business class. Conventional trains offer hard seat, hard sleeper and soft sleeper. Sleeper-equipped high-speed sets use berth compartments instead of seats. Second class is the normal choice for a seven-hour daytime run.
Is the train or the flight better for Beijing to Chongqing?
The flight is shorter in the air, but both cities use airports well outside the centre, which adds two transfers. The high-speed train runs city centre to city centre in about 7 hours with no baggage queue. If your time in Chongqing is short, flying saves hours; otherwise the train is simpler.
Does the train stop anywhere useful on the way?
Beijing to Chongqing crosses a long stretch of central and southwest China, with intermediate stops that vary by train. If you want to break the journey rather than ride straight through, plan it as a separate booking: tickets are sold for a specific train and date, and a missed onward train is not automatically rebooked.
