Chengdu to Kunming by Train (2026): Times, Fares and Booking

Under six hours on the fastest high-speed train, a sleeper on the mountain line as the alternative, and the 15-day booking window · Updated September 2026

Short answer

High-speed trains run Chengdu East to Kunming South in just under six hours on the fastest services, with most departures taking six to eight hours. The route runs roughly 1,100 kilometres through Chongqing West and Guiyang North.

The alternative is a sleeper on the conventional line between Chengdu station and Kunming station. The double-track rebuild finished at the end of 2022 and cut the historic nineteen-hour trip dramatically, but timings vary by train, so check the 12306 app rather than an old timetable.

Tickets open 15 days ahead, foreign passports are supported, and there are around 25 to 30 high-speed departures a day. The one thing to get right is the station: Chengdu East and Chengdu station are different buildings, and so are Kunming South and Kunming station.

Two different trips to the same city

This corridor has two railways, and they are not interchangeable. Picking the wrong one costs you half a day and puts you in the wrong half of a city.

The high-speed route runs on the Chengdu–Guiyang high-speed line and the Shanghai–Kunming high-speed line, via Chongqing West and Guiyang North. It climbs through Guizhou's mountain country, uses a lot of tunnel, and lands at Kunming South, about 1,100 kilometres from where it started.

The conventional route is the rebuilt Chengdu–Kunming railway through western Sichuan. This is the line with the sleepers, the mountain scenery and the Jinsha River valley. It ends at Kunming station, which is closer to the city centre.

Stations: the part people get wrong

CityStationUsed byNotes
Chengdu Chengdu East (成都东) High-speed G and D trains The main high-speed hub, on the city metro network. Allow 40 minutes to reach the centre by metro.
Chengdu Chengdu station (成都站) Conventional overnight trains The older central station. Sleepers to Kunming leave from here, not from Chengdu East.
Kunming Kunming South (昆明南) High-speed G and D trains Well outside the city centre — roughly half an hour by road. Metro, buses and taxis connect it to town.
Kunming Kunming station (昆明站) Conventional and onward trains Closer to downtown, and the departure point for many onward services toward the rest of Yunnan.

Read the station in brackets on your ticket, not just the city name. Chengdu East to Kunming station is not a bookable pair, and neither is Chengdu station to Kunming South. Station naming and gate procedure are covered in our China train station guide.

Journey times

ServiceStationsTypical timeFrequency
Fastest G trains Chengdu East → Kunming South Just under 6 hours A handful of the day's departures
Most G and D trains Chengdu East → Kunming South 6 to 8 hours, depending on stops and route Roughly 25 to 30 trains a day, early morning to late afternoon
Overnight conventional Chengdu station → Kunming station Longer, varies by train A handful of departures, mostly at night

The spread matters. A nearly six-hour train and an eight-hour train on the same city pair look identical in a search result until you read the duration column. For a long day on the rails, the difference between arriving at dinner and arriving at midnight is the whole day.

Departure times cluster in the morning The high-speed timetable is full from early morning to late afternoon, then thins out. A late-afternoon start means arriving in Kunming in the evening, and then a half-hour transfer into the city. Check the timetable on your travel date rather than assuming an evening option exists.

Seat classes on this route

Both train families are used on the corridor, and so are both berth types.

ClassWhere it existsWhat it looks like
Second classG and D trains3+2 seating. On a six to eight hour trip this is a long day, but the fare is the reason most passengers book it.
First classG and D trains2+2 seating, more legroom, quieter carriage. Worth the difference on a journey this long.
Business classG trains that offer it1+2 seating, near-flat recline. Priced several times above second class.
Hard sleeperOvernight conventional trainsOpen bays of six berths in three tiers, no door. The cheapest way to sleep your way between the two cities.
Soft sleeperOvernight conventional trainsFour berths in an enclosed compartment with a door. Two or three times the price of a hard sleeper.

Seat letters, carriage layouts and what each class includes are set out in our train seat classes guide. Berth types and how to choose between them are covered in the sleeper train guide.

The overnight sleeper, honestly

A sleeper on this corridor is a real option rather than a nostalgia trip. You leave Chengdu in the evening, sleep through the mountains, and arrive in Kunming in the morning without paying for a hotel night.

The caveat is the timetable. The conventional line has been rebuilt in stages, and the historic nineteen-hour journey no longer describes the fastest conventional trains — China's government news service quoted a cut from about nineteen hours to roughly seven and a half when the new double-track line opened at the end of 2022. Individual trains still vary enormously, and berth availability on a given date is the practical limit.

Do not buy a sleeper ticket from a screenshot Sleeper timings, train numbers and berth inventories change with every timetable adjustment, and third-party pages frequently publish years-old schedules. Check the departure and arrival times for your date in the 12306 app, and book the berth you want as soon as the 15-day window opens — hard sleepers sell out before soft sleepers on popular nights.

Booking: 15 days, one passport, one train

Tickets go on sale 15 days before departure. That is a short window for a route this long, and the evening departures and the fastest morning trains are the first to go.

  1. Verify your passport in 12306 before the release dateVerification is not always instant, and you cannot hold a seat on this corridor while you wait for it to clear.
  2. Search the exact station pairChengdu East to Kunming South for high-speed, Chengdu to Kunming for the conventional line. A city-to-city search mixes the two and hides the difference.
  3. Book on the morning the window opensFifteen days out. If your date is near a Chinese public holiday, the fastest trains can be gone the same day.
  4. Pick your class deliberatelySecond class for budget, first class for a six-hour-plus day, a sleeper if you want the night. There is no wrong answer, only a mismatch with how you plan to spend the hours.
  5. Plan the station transfer at both endsChengdu East to the city centre, and Kunming South back in, each take around half an hour or more. The train is not the whole journey.

The app walkthrough is in our 12306 in English guide, and the wider booking picture, including refund rules if plans change, is in buying train tickets in China.

What to expect on board

A six to eight hour high-speed run is a normal working day for these trains. Assigned seats, overhead racks, larger luggage space at the carriage ends, power sockets at seats on the G trains, and a dining car or trolley service on most departures. Bring your own water and something to eat anyway — the trolley does not always reach every carriage on a full train.

Boarding gates close a few minutes before departure. On a long trip, being at the gate early matters less than being on the right platform, and Chinese stations post the platform number only shortly before boarding starts. Get to the concourse with time to spare and watch the departure board. Luggage limits are in our train luggage rules page.

If the plan changes mid-trip, refund and change windows are in our train refunds and changes guide.

Kunming as a junction

Most travellers on this route are not finishing in Kunming. The city is the gateway to Dali, Lijiang, Shangri-La and the rest of Yunnan, and onward rail connections matter more than the arrival station's coffee options.

Kunming South handles the high-speed network. Kunming station handles many conventional and onward services. If you are continuing immediately, check which station your next train leaves from before booking the first one — an hour between a Kunming South arrival and a Kunming station departure is not a connection, it is a drive across town. Our Kunming to Lijiang page covers the onward leg.

Frequently asked questions

How long is the train from Chengdu to Kunming?

The fastest high-speed services do Chengdu East to Kunming South in just under six hours. Most departures take between six and eight hours depending on the route and the number of stops, and the busiest timetable carries around 25 to 30 trains a day. Conventional overnight trains are slower again and run to a different pair of stations.

Which stations do the Chengdu to Kunming trains use?

High-speed trains run from Chengdu East to Kunming South, roughly 1,100 kilometres via Chongqing West and Guiyang North. Conventional overnight trains use Chengdu station to Kunming station instead. The two pairs are separate buildings in both cities, so the station name on the ticket matters more here than on most routes.

Is there an overnight sleeper from Chengdu to Kunming?

Yes. Conventional overnight trains with hard and soft sleeper berths run between Chengdu station and Kunming station. The double-track rebuild of the Chengdu to Kunming railway, opened at the end of 2022, cut the journey dramatically from the historic nineteen-hour trip. Current departure times and berth availability change, so check the 12306 app.

When do Chengdu to Kunming tickets go on sale?

Fifteen days before departure, on 12306 and through authorised agents. Sales stay open until shortly before the train leaves. Register and verify your passport well before the release date, because verification is not always instant and this is a long, popular corridor.

How much does the Chengdu to Kunming train cost?

Second class on the high-speed service is a several-hundred-yuan fare, first class is roughly two-thirds more, and business class on the G trains is several times second class. Sleeper berths on the overnight trains are cheaper than high-speed second class. Exact fares vary by train type and date, so treat the figure in the 12306 app as the only reliable one.

Can I book with a foreign passport?

Yes. 12306 accepts foreign passports for both high-speed and conventional trains, and the ticket is tied to the passport number rather than to a paper coupon. Carry the same passport you booked with, arrive early enough for security, and use the staffed lane at the gate if the automatic reader does not recognise the document.

Will the Chengdu to Kunming trip get faster?

Yes. The Chengdu to Yibin high-speed section has been open since December 2023, and the remaining Yibin to Kunming section is expected to open around 2027. Once it does, the whole trip should fall under three hours. Until then the existing route through Chongqing and Guiyang is the one to book.

How do I get from Kunming South into the city?

Kunming South is an out-of-town station, roughly half an hour by road from the centre, so budget extra time at both ends of the day. Metro, buses and taxis connect it to downtown Kunming. Do not assume the station is walkable to Green Lake or the old town district.

Is the Chengdu to Kunming train scenic?

Parts of it, yes. The high-speed route runs through mountain country in Guizhou and northern Yunnan, with long tunnel sections breaking up the views. The conventional line on the rebuilt Chengdu to Kunming railway climbs through the mountains of western Sichuan and crosses the Jinsha River valley, which is the more dramatic of the two on a clear day.

Should I fly instead?

Flying is faster on paper and less reliable in practice once airport transfers are counted, because both Chengdu and Kunming airports sit well outside their city centres. The train runs city edge to city edge, the stations are on the metro, and there are no luggage fees or weather cancellations to plan around. For most travellers the train is the better use of a day.

This is one of the longer single legs in the southwest network, and it chains neatly with the short hops around it: Chengdu to Chongqing in the east and Xi'an to Chengdu in the north both feed into it. Booking all three on the same 15-day release cycle is the simplest way to hold a sensible itinerary.
