Shanghai to Harbin by Train (2026): Times, Fares and Booking

One direct high-speed train a day at about 12 hours, the 24-hour overnight sleeper, the Beijing transfer, and the 15-day booking window · Updated September 2026

Short answer

Two trains do the whole run. The direct high-speed train leaves Shanghai Hongqiao in the morning and reaches Harbin West the same evening, which current listings put at about 12 hours. The overnight sleeper leaves Shanghai main station in the evening and arrives in Harbin the following evening, around 24 hours later, at roughly a quarter of the price.

The high-speed option is one departure a day. That is the single most important fact on this page: if it is sold out, the alternatives are the sleeper, a flight, or a change of trains in Beijing.

Route listings put the rail distance at about 2,553 km. Sales open 15 days before departure on 12306, and the January and February window around the Ice and Snow Festival is when the direct train goes first.

The options on this route

Shanghai is on the east coast and Harbin is in the far northeast, so the line runs north through the Yangtze delta and the North China plain before the final leg up through Manchuria. The whole trip stays inside the high-speed network, which is why 2,553 km takes about twelve hours rather than two days.

OptionClasses soldTypical journey timeStation in Shanghai
Direct high-speed train (G class) Second class, first class, business class About 12 hours; morning departure, same-evening arrival. One departure a day. Shanghai Hongqiao (上海虹桥站)
Overnight sleeper (Z class) Soft sleeper, hard sleeper, hard seat About 24 hours; evening departure, next-evening arrival Shanghai Railway Station (上海站)
High-speed with a change in Beijing Seats on both legs, berths on some overnight departures Roughly 10 to 13 hours of train time plus the transfer Shanghai Hongqiao for the first leg
Flight — A few hours in the air Shanghai Pudong or Hongqiao airport

Train numbers, departure times and seat-class lists on this corridor are reissued several times a year. Read the pattern here as current, then search 12306 for your date before planning around a specific departure.

Book the high-speed train when the window opens One direct departure a day is a thin margin. In the first two months of the year, when the Ice and Snow Festival pulls domestic visitors north, and again during the Spring Festival travel rush, this train fills the morning sales open. The sleeper is the fallback that is usually still available — book that the same day if the high-speed option is gone.

Station choices in Shanghai

Shanghai has several main stations and the two used on this route are on opposite sides of the city centre.

StationWhere it isTrains to Harbin?
Shanghai Hongqiao Railway Station (上海虹桥站) West of the centre, attached to Hongqiao airport and on the metro network Yes — the direct high-speed train and the first leg of a Beijing connection
Shanghai Railway Station (上海站) Central, north of the Huangpu river in Zhabei Yes — the overnight Z-class sleeper
Shanghai South (上海南站) South of the centre Not on this route; serves southern and coastal services

Hongqiao is the bigger and busier of the two, and it handles airport traffic as well as rail, so allow more time than the size of the train suggests. Shanghai main station is smaller and closer to the hotels around the Bund, which makes the sleeper the easier departure to reach if you are staying centrally.

The Beijing legs are the ones that connect onwards after this trip, and both are covered in more detail on the Beijing to Shanghai page and the Beijing to Harbin page.

Station choices in Harbin

StationLocationServes
Harbin West Railway Station (哈尔滨西站) West of the city centre, the newer high-speed station Listed arrival point for both the direct high-speed train and the overnight sleeper
Harbin main station (哈尔滨站) Central, close to the old town and the Ice and Snow World side of the city Some high-speed services on other routes; check the ticket

If your hotel is in the central grid around Central Street, Harbin West is a metro ride or a taxi away rather than a walk. Arriving at 21:38 on the high-speed train means the last hours of the evening, which is fine for a hotel transfer and hopeless for a same-day trip out to the snow sculpture park.

What the twelve-hour train is actually like

It is a normal 300 km/h Chinese high-speed train: reserved seats, a dining car, a trolley, power sockets at every seat and hot water at the end of each carriage. Twelve hours is comfortable in first class and tolerable in second.

The line runs north through the flat farming country of the north China plain and crosses the Yellow River and later the Songhua, which is the widest and most dramatic of the crossings. After Shenyang the landscape turns to the Manchurian plain, and in winter the last few hours are white the whole way.

Two practical points. Food on board is limited to the dining car and instant noodles, so bring something better for a twelve-hour day. And the train stays warm while the air outside does not, which makes layers the right answer and a single heavy coat a bad one.

Fares on this corridor are distance-based and are adjusted from time to time, and high-speed seat prices in China can differ between departures. The live price in 12306 for your date is the only figure to plan around. Third-party sellers add a handling fee on top of the official fare.

Booking with a foreign passport

  1. Finish 12306 identity verification before you travelThe English site and app accept foreign passports, but the account cannot buy anything until verification passes. The steps are in the 12306 English guide.
  2. Match the name to the passport exactlySurname, given names, middle names, in passport order. A mismatch with the identity record is the usual cause of a failed purchase.
  3. Book on the day the 15-day window opensOne direct high-speed train a day means the difference between choosing a seat and taking the sleeper.
  4. Decide between Hongqiao and Shanghai main stationHongqiao for the high-speed train, Shanghai main station for the sleeper. They are not the same place.
  5. Use the waitlist if the direct train is full12306 releases returned tickets automatically, and single-daily services do see cancellations.
  6. Carry the passport you booked withIt is the ticket at the gate, and the conductor checks it on board.

Changes and refunds on sleepers are stricter than on short high-speed hops, and the fees step up inside the last 24 hours. Our refund and change page has the schedule.

Harbin in winter: what the arrival means

Most foreign visitors take this train for one reason, and it is the one on every poster: the ice and snow festival season, which runs roughly from late December into February. Exact dates move each year, so check the official event channel rather than a blog post.

Outside winter the city is a different trip: the same route in June reaches a comfortable Harbin and puts the Russian-era architecture of Central Street in walking weather. The trains are also quieter, which makes it easier to book the direct high-speed departure at the last minute.

Frequently asked questions

How long is the train from Shanghai to Harbin?

Two options bookend the route. The direct high-speed train covers Shanghai Hongqiao to Harbin West in about 12 hours, leaving in the morning and arriving in the evening. The conventional overnight sleeper takes around 24 hours, leaving Shanghai in the evening and arriving in Harbin the following evening. Timetables are revised several times a year, so confirm your date on 12306.

Which Shanghai station do trains to Harbin leave from?

The direct high-speed train leaves from Shanghai Hongqiao Railway Station (上海虹桥站). The overnight Z-class sleeper leaves from Shanghai Railway Station (上海站) in the city centre. They are different stations, roughly half an hour apart by metro, so read the ticket before arranging a lift.

Is there more than one direct high-speed train a day?

No. The Shanghai to Harbin direct high-speed service is a single daily departure in current listings, which is unusual for a route of this size and the main reason it books out early. For a choice of departure times, the practical answer is to change trains in Beijing.

Is the overnight sleeper a good option?

If you want to save a hotel night and pay about a quarter of the high-speed fare, yes. Around 24 hours is a long time in a seat, so book a sleeper berth rather than a hard seat. The berth price sits between the hard seat and the high-speed second class fare.

Where does the train arrive in Harbin?

Both the direct high-speed train and the overnight sleeper are listed into Harbin West Railway Station (哈尔滨西站), west of the city centre. Some high-speed services on other routes use Harbin main station (哈尔滨站) instead, so confirm which one your ticket names before booking a hotel.

How far in advance can I book a Shanghai to Harbin ticket?

Sales open 15 days before departure on 12306, counting the departure date, and close about 30 minutes before the train leaves. With one direct high-speed departure a day, and heavy demand in January and February for the Ice and Snow Festival, booking on the day the window opens is the safe approach.

What does the Shanghai to Harbin train cost?

Current listings show the direct high-speed train from roughly CNY 1,100 for second class, with first class and business class above that, and the overnight sleeper from roughly CNY 270 for a hard seat, with hard and soft sleeper berths in between. Fares are distance-based and change over time, so check the official channel for your date.

How cold is Harbin and what should I pack for the train?

Harbin in January and February regularly runs well below freezing, with temperatures that can drop past minus 25 degrees Celsius at night. The train itself is heated, so dress in layers you can remove rather than one heavy coat, and put the serious down jacket, hat and gloves in a bag you can open on arrival.

Is it better to change trains in Beijing?

It gives you more departures and often a cheaper total fare, at the cost of a cross-city transfer in Beijing and two separate bookings. The two legs do not always use the same Beijing station, so build in at least two hours between arrival and departure and check both stations on 12306.

Can the ticket be bought with a foreign passport?

Yes, once identity verification is complete on the English 12306 site or app, with the passenger name matching the passport exactly, including middle names. The same passport is the ticket at the gate. Third-party agents also sell this route for a handling fee.
