Shanghai to Lijiang by Train (2026): Times, Fares and Booking

Two long legs, one Kunming connection, and how to split the trip so it stops being a marathon · Updated September 2026

Short answer

There is no direct Shanghai to Lijiang train. You ride the high-speed trunk line west to Kunming, then change onto a Lijiang service. Total time on board is about 15 to 17 hours across the two legs, plus the connection.

The Shanghai to Kunming leg is the long one, roughly 10 to 12 hours on a G series train out of Shanghai Hongqiao. Kunming to Lijiang adds about 3 to 4 hours and, importantly, does not always leave from the station you arrived at.

No useful sleeper berth exists on this route. The move that works is to sleep in a Kunming hotel between the two daytime trains, or better, to insert Dali between them and turn one exhausting transfer into a two-stop Yunnan itinerary.

Is there a direct Shanghai to Lijiang train?

No. Published rail itineraries for this city pair involve a change in Kunming, and the total onboard time lands around 15 to 17 hours depending on which connection you take.

That is a long day on a train, and it is worth being clear about what it is and is not. It is not a scenic mountain ride for its whole length — the Shanghai to Kunming leg is a working trunk line through eastern China, with long tunnel sections. The compensation arrives at the end, on the last few hours toward Lijiang, where the line lifts into the Yunnan plateau.

Rail or air? This is the one route in our train guides where flying deserves a serious look. Shanghai to Lijiang by air usually means one stop, and it turns a 15-hour day into a few hours. The train makes sense if you want fixed prices, no baggage limits, and Dali or Kunming on the way.

The route, leg by leg

Ranges only. Timetables are revised periodically and specific train numbers are not fixed facts — check the 12306 app for the date you travel.

LegFromToTrain typeTypical time
1 Shanghai Hongqiao (上海虹桥) Kunming South (昆明南) G series, high speed About 10–12 hours
2 Kunming (昆明) or Kunming South (昆明南) Lijiang (丽江) D series, high speed About 3–4 hours
Change Kunming — and possibly across town between two stations Allow 90–120 minutes
Total On board, excluding the connection and station transfers About 15–17 hours

The connection deserves more attention than the trains themselves. A same-station change at Kunming South is a walk and a wait. A change from Kunming South to Kunming Railway Station involves crossing the city, and that is where tight itineraries fall apart.

The stations involved

StationChinese nameRole on this trip
Shanghai Hongqiao上海虹桥Where the long westward high-speed trains leave. Connected to Hongqiao airport and metro lines.
Kunming South昆明南站Arrival point for most high-speed trains from the east. Some Lijiang services also depart here.
Kunming Railway Station昆明站City-centre station and the origin of many Lijiang departures, including routes via Chuxiong.
Lijiang Railway Station丽江站Arrival point, south of the city. Lijiang Old Town is a short drive away.

Both Kunming stations appear on this route, and which one your Lijiang train uses varies by service. The tickets say so plainly; the problem is that people read the city name and stop there. Our station guide covers how the naming works and how to read a Chinese ticket, and the route directory shows how the Yunnan lines fit together.

Seat classes on this route

Three classes on the G series long leg, two or three on the D series leg. What the fares actually buy is set out in the seat class reference; here is how it applies to this trip.

ClassLayoutVerdict on this route
Second class (二等座)3+2 rowsFine for the 3 to 4-hour Kunming to Lijiang hop. Punishing over a full 10 to 12-hour day.
First class (一等座)2+2 rowsThe sensible buy on the long leg. More room, quieter carriage, and the price gap is smaller than people assume.
Business class (商务座)1+2 rowsReclining seats on the long leg. Costly, limited in number, and usually gone within days of sales opening.
Premium tiers on D trainsVariesNot present on every Lijiang service. Over three hours it rarely changes the experience.

There is no sleeper class on the high-speed trains here. Berths exist on conventional services only, which is the next section.

Is an overnight sleeper an alternative?

Not a useful one. Conventional K and Z trains still work the Shanghai to Kunming corridor with hard and soft sleeper berths, but their published running times are measured in more than a day, which is slower than two daytime high-speed legs by a wide margin. No direct sleeper service to Lijiang is published at all.

The Kunming to Lijiang line itself is short enough that a berth would not help: three to four hours is a morning or an afternoon, not a night.

So the honest answer for this route is a hotel, not a berth. A bed in Kunming between two daytime trains beats any sleeper arrangement on this corridor on time, cost and sleep quality. If you are using berths elsewhere on the trip, the berth hierarchy in our sleeper guide is worth ten minutes before booking.

Booking with a foreign passport

The sales window is roughly 15 days ahead of departure. It has been adjusted before, so check the app for the current opening day rather than working from an old guide. On this route the Shanghai to Kunming leg is the one under pressure; the Lijiang hop has more departures and more slack.

  1. Set up your 12306 profile with passport details exactly as printedEvery given name, in order. A profile that drops a middle name can fail at the gate even though the booking succeeded. Non-Chinese passport holders board on the passport, not on an ID card.
  2. Buy Shanghai to Kunming first, on opening dayFirst and business class go first on this run. If you are travelling in a group, book together so the system seats you in the same carriage.
  3. Choose the Kunming to Lijiang departure with a marginAllow 90 to 120 minutes, and more if the connection crosses between Kunming South and Kunming Railway Station. Do not book a 45-minute gap onto a different station.
  4. Check the departure station twiceOnce when booking, once the night before. Kunming Station and Kunming South are not interchangeable and neither is a walk from the other.
  5. Carry the passport physically the whole dayStation entrance, security check and gate all require it. Losing it mid-route strands you in Kunming. Buying at the counter or through the app with a passport is covered in our notes on 12306 in English.
Do not count on a protected connection The two legs are separate bookings in most cases. If the first train runs late and you miss the second, the second is not automatically moved for you. What can be refunded or changed, and under what conditions, is summarised in our refund and change guide — read it before buying a tight connection.

How to split this trip sensibly

Fifteen hours on trains in one push is legal but not enjoyable, and two stopovers turn the same route into the highlight of a China trip.

PlanNightsWhy it works
Shanghai → Kunming → Lijiang direct1 night in KunmingShortest door-to-door. Sleeps in a bed instead of a berth, and the second train is short.
Shanghai → Kunming → Dali → Lijiang2 nights or moreUses the corridor properly. Dali to Lijiang is about 1.5 hours by high-speed train, so no backtracking to Kunming.
Shanghai → Kunming, fly on to Lijiang1 night in KunmingFastest overall. Mixing modes is normal here and Kunming's airport is well connected.

Of the three, the middle option costs one extra day and gets you two of Yunnan's best-known places. From Lijiang the corridor continues north, and the same line keeps going toward Shangri-La, so Lijiang works as a stop on a longer run rather than as a terminus.

Arriving at Lijiang station

Lijiang Railway Station sits south of the city, not beside the old town. Lijiang Old Town, also called Dayan, is a short drive north, and the newer Shuhe area is further out again.

City buses, taxis and ride-hailing cars serve the station forecourt. Guesthouses and hotels in the old town frequently offer a pickup, which is the smoothest arrival, particularly after a 4-hour evening train and a 15-hour day. Ask in advance, in writing, so you have the arrangement in your messages when you step off the platform.

Altitude is the other thing at this point. Lijiang sits above 2,000 metres, so the first evening is not the one for a late night. The step up to Shangri-La is larger again and is worth planning separately.

Frequently asked questions

Is there a direct train from Shanghai to Lijiang?

No published direct service. You travel in two legs with a change in Kunming, and the total onboard time is around 15 to 17 hours.

How long does the whole trip take?

About 15 to 17 hours on the trains, plus 90 to 120 minutes for the connection, plus getting between stations and city transfers. Plan it as two days of travel, not one.

Which Kunming station do the Lijiang trains use?

Both. Many Lijiang services leave from Kunming Railway Station (昆明站) in the centre, and some from Kunming South (昆明南站), which is where most long-distance high-speed trains from Shanghai arrive. Check the departure station on each ticket.

Is there a sleeper train on this route?

Not a useful one. Conventional overnight trains on the Shanghai to Kunming corridor take well over a day, and the Kunming to Lijiang high-speed leg has no berths. A hotel night in Kunming is faster and more comfortable.

How far ahead do tickets go on sale?

Roughly 15 days before departure. Verify the current window in the 12306 app — it is set by China Railway and has been changed before.

Can a foreign passport holder book these tickets?

Yes, on 12306 or at station counters. Register with the name and passport number exactly as printed, and carry the physical passport for station entry and the ticket gate.

What is the best way to break the journey?

One night in Kunming is the minimum. A second stop in Dali is the better trip: it sits on the same corridor and is about 1.5 hours from Lijiang by high-speed train.

Does the train arrive near Lijiang Old Town?

Lijiang Railway Station is south of the city and a short drive from Lijiang Old Town (Dayan). Buses, taxis and ride-hailing cars all serve the station, and many guesthouses arrange pickups.

Is this route worth doing by train at all?

Only if the train is part of what you want. Flying is far faster for this distance. The rail case is a fixed fare, no baggage limits, and the option to stop in Kunming or Dali on the way.

Should I expect altitude sickness in Lijiang?

Lijiang sits above 2,000 metres. Most visitors notice mild breathlessness on stairs and sleep poorly the first night. Keep the first evening quiet, drink water, and plan the bigger altitude gain — Shangri-La — for later in the trip.
