Short answer
High-speed trains link Xi'an North with Chongqing in roughly 5 to 6.5 hours over about 977 km. The quickest published departures come in around 4h 50m to 5h. Around 20 high-speed trains a day run this corridor, mostly during the day.
Most of them arrive at Chongqing West, with a smaller number serving Chongqing North and Shapingba. The three are kilometres apart on different metro lines, so the station on your ticket decides your onward route.
Tickets normally open 15 days before departure on 12306. Second class has been published at up to roughly CNY 565 one way on the pricier trains, with cheaper departures below that — fares are demand-priced, so the app, not a guide, holds the real number.
The two ways to do this route
Xi'an and Chongqing sit on opposite sides of the Qinling range, and the high-speed line that crosses it turned a long slog into a half-day trip.
| High-speed (G and D) | Conventional (K / T / Z) | |
|---|---|---|
| Journey time | Roughly 5–6.5h; fastest around 4h 50m | Considerably longer, with more stops |
| Departure station | Xi'an North | Xi'an station and others |
| Arrival stations | Mostly Chongqing West; some Chongqing North and Shapingba | Chongqing North and Chongqing West |
| When it runs | Morning to early evening | Includes overnight services |
| Seat types | Second, first, business class | Hard seat, hard sleeper, soft sleeper |
| Who it suits | Nearly everyone | Only if the fare is the deciding factor |
Published schedules show roughly 20 high-speed departures a day in each direction, so the timetable is dense enough to fit around a sightseeing morning. Train numbers and times change with each revision — the current list is in the 12306 app.
Xi'an North: how to use it
Xi'an North (Xi'anbei) is the high-speed terminal, about 15 km north of the old city wall. Metro lines 2, 4 and 14 serve it, and the airport express-style interchange at Beikezhan makes it reachable from most of central Xi'an without a taxi.
Practical points worth knowing before a departure:
- Allow 45 to 60 minutes at the station. Security screening at the entrance queues badly on weekends and public holidays.
- Do not confuse it with Xi'an station, which sits beside the city wall and handles conventional trains. Both are named Xi'an on booking screens.
- Food before boarding. Vendors outside the concourse and a supermarket upstairs are cheaper than the on-train trolley.
- Terracotta Army days. If you are visiting the Terracotta Army in the morning and leaving the same day, keep at least two hours between getting back into the city and your departure time.
The station guide covers how to read the departure boards, the ticket gates and the platform check.
Chongqing West, Chongqing North or Shapingba
Chongqing is a dense city on steep ground, and the station name on your booking changes the last hour of the trip.
- Chongqing West (Chongqingxi) — where most Xi'an trains end. A large terminal on metro line 5 and the Loop line, set some distance from the central peninsula.
- Chongqing North (Chongqingbei) — the more convenient arrival for Jiefangbei and the Raffles area, on metro lines 3 and 10 and the Loop line. Only some services use it, so it is worth filtering for when you book.
- Shapingba — a central stop next to the Ciqikou old town area and a major metro interchange. Ideal if a train on your date happens to stop there.
Decide the station before the hotel, not after. A 20-minute metro ride between Chongqing West and the centre is fine with luggage; a 40-minute taxi in Chongqing's hill traffic is less fine at 9pm.
Journey times, and where they come from
Two train families run this line. G-series sets run the fastest schedules, in the region of 5 hours. D-series sets run at lower speeds and take around 5.5 to 6.5 hours with more stops.
That spread means the difference between catching dinner in Chongqing and arriving after it. Filter by arrival time rather than departure time when you book.
The route leaves the Guanzhong plain, crosses the Qinling range and drops into the Sichuan Basin. Expect long tunnels on the crossing and a mobile signal that comes and goes with them.
Seat classes on this route
| Class | Layout | Note for a 5-hour trip |
|---|---|---|
| Second class | 3 + 2 | Right choice for most travellers; socket at the seat |
| First class | 2 + 2 | Wider seat, quieter carriage, a real step up in price |
| Business class | 1 + 2 | Lie-flat seating on some sets; only present on certain G trains |
| Hard seat (conventional) | 3 + 2, no recline | Cheap, and attached to a much longer trip |
| Hard sleeper (conventional) | Open bay of 6 berths | Only relevant if you deliberately book the slower train |
| Soft sleeper (conventional) | Closed compartment of 4 berths | Quieter, with a door and a higher fare |
Not every train carries every class. D-series sets on some corridors have no business class at all, and the classes on sale for your specific train appear in the app at the point of booking. Our seat classes guide explains what each one includes.
Booking with a foreign passport
The official route is the 12306 app or the English website. A foreign passport is a supported identity document and the passport number becomes the ticket.
- Create the account before you travelEnter the name exactly as printed on the passport, including middle names, and keep the account phone number active while you are in China.
- Check the pre-sale opening for your dateThe standard period is 15 days ahead, and sales run until roughly 30 minutes before departure. Spring Festival, the October holiday and summer weekends fill the fast morning trains first.
- Filter by arrival stationChongqing West and Chongqing North are different journeys at the last mile. Pick the one that fits your hotel.
- Pay in the app and save the referenceSeats allocate immediately on payment. Screenshot the order and train number in case the network drops.
- Board with the same passportThere is usually no paper ticket. The passport is scanned at the station gate and checked again at the platform.
Booking mechanics, alternative channels and what to do when a train is full are in the train ticket guide. If plans move, the refund and change guide covers the rules.
Is the overnight train worth it here?
On a five-hour corridor, no. A conventional overnight on this route makes more stops and takes far longer than the sleeper ever saves, so you lose a day of the trip to avoid paying for a hotel night. The high-speed daytime train plus a room in either city is the cheaper trade in total time.
If you are on a very tight budget and want to see the route at night, the sleeper still exists, but check the actual duration on 12306 before deciding — it is not a five-hour berth. Our sleeper guide covers what the berths are like.
On board
- Food. Trolley service and a dining car with rice boxes, noodles and snacks. Hot water is free at the carriage ends, so most passengers travel with noodles or tea.
- Power. Sockets at each second-class seat, usually low down between seats. A power bank covers the stretch where you stand in the queue at the door.
- Luggage. Overhead racks for cabin bags, larger racks at the carriage ends for suitcases. Nothing is weighed, but the luggage rules list the items security will refuse.
- Arrival. Announcements are bilingual on most sets. Metro signage follows the exit at all three Chongqing stations.
Frequently asked questions
How long is the train from Xi'an to Chongqing?
High-speed trains take roughly 5 hours on the fastest departures and up to about 6.5 hours on slower ones. Conventional trains on the corridor take much longer, which is why almost all visitors use the high-speed service.
Which stations does the Xi'an to Chongqing train use?
Nearly all high-speed trains leave from Xi'an North and most arrive at Chongqing West, with a smaller number serving Chongqing North and Shapingba. Xi'an station handles conventional services. Check the station printed on the ticket before arranging transfers.
Is there an overnight sleeper option between Xi'an and Chongqing?
Conventional overnight trains run the corridor, but they make more stops and take considerably longer than the high-speed service, so the night saved is not worth the day lost. On this route, a daytime high-speed train and a hotel night in either city is usually cheaper in total time.
How much does the Xi'an to Chongqing train cost?
Published fare lists put second class at up to roughly CNY 565 one way on the higher-priced trains, with cheaper departures below that. First and business class cost more. Fares are demand-priced, so the exact figure for your date is on 12306.
How far in advance can I buy a ticket?
The standard pre-sale period is 15 days before departure, with sales open until about 30 minutes before the train leaves. China Railway adjusts this window from time to time, so confirm the current period inside the 12306 app.
Can a foreigner book this train with a passport?
Yes. The 12306 app and its English website accept foreign passports, and the passport number is the ticket. Register before travel, enter your name exactly as printed, and carry the same passport to the station gate.
How many trains run between the two cities each day?
Published schedules show around 20 high-speed departures a day, spread between morning and early evening. The count changes with each timetable revision, and the live list for your date is in the 12306 app.
Does the route go through the mountains?
Yes. The line leaves the Guanzhong plain, crosses the Qinling range and descends into the Sichuan Basin, so long tunnelled sections and steep valley views are part of the ride. Mobile signal drops inside the tunnels.
