Short answer
Three days is the right length for Urumqi. Day one is the city: the Xinjiang Regional Museum, Erdaoqiao and the International Grand Bazaar, Hongshan Park, then dinner in the Uyghur food lanes. Day two is Tianshan Tianchi, about 110 km east and a full day out. Day three is the Nanshan pastures 60 to 75 km south, or Turpan, roughly 160 km east and about an hour by high-speed train.
Stay within walking distance of metro Line 1 and almost nothing on the city list needs a taxi. The line runs from Santunbei in the south to the airport in the north, calling at Museum, Erdaoqiao, Nanmen and Nanhu Square, with fares from ¥2 and about ¥7 for the airport leg.
Two bookings decide how smoothly the trip runs: a timed museum slot through its official WeChat account with your passport as the ID, and transport to Tianchi, where the return coach leaves on a fixed afternoon schedule and a private car is the only way to stay later. Urumqi keeps Beijing time officially, and every printed timetable follows it.
Three days at a glance
| Day | Plan | Book ahead? |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Museum, Erdaoqiao and the Grand Bazaar, Hongshan Park, dinner at the food lanes | Museum slot |
| 2 | Tianshan Tianchi, with the compulsory park shuttle inside the scenic area | Transport and gate tickets |
| 3 | Nanshan pastures, or Turpan by high-speed train | Train if Turpan |
Day one absorbs a late arrival, because the museum slot cannot slide. Turpan suits day three best, its train legs being short and fixed.
Day 1: the city
| Time | What | How |
|---|---|---|
| 09:00 | Breakfast: naan, yoghurt, milk tea | Near the hotel or at Nanmen |
| 10:00 | Xinjiang Regional Museum, 2.5 to 3 hours | Line 1, Museum station, exit D |
| 13:00 | Lunch at Erdaoqiao | Line 1, two stops south |
| 14:00 | Grand Bazaar, food street and trading streets | Walk from Erdaoqiao station |
| 16:30 | Hongshan Park, the red rock hill | Bus 51, or a short taxi |
| 18:30 | Dinner: kebabs, noodles, pilaf | Erdaoqiao, or around Nanmen |
| 20:30 | Evening around Nanhu Square | Line 1, Nanhu Square station |
The museum is the fixed point. Entry is free, but the visit is reserved by timed slot with real-name ID, passport included, through the museum's official WeChat account, and daily numbers are capped. Off-season the slot can often be taken the same day; in July and August it goes days ahead. Closed Mondays. The address is 581 Northwest Road in Shayibake district, with hours broadly 10:00 to 18:30 in the longer months and 10:30 to 18:00 in the shorter ones. If the Chinese-language interface is a wall, the hotel front desk booking on your behalf is the normal route.
Day 2: Tianshan Tianchi
The lake sits at about 1,910 metres in the Tian Shan, roughly 110 km east, an hour and a half to two hours by road. From the gate car park a further 30-odd km of switchbacks leads to the lake, covered by a compulsory park shuttle taking 30 to 45 minutes, with summer queues that can add another 45 minutes. The last 800 m is a walk or a ¥10 electric cart.
| Time | What |
|---|---|
| 07:30 | Leave the city. Morning coaches depart from the Nanjiao long-distance station near the South Railway Station, and from the passenger station opposite the main railway station |
| 09:30 | Scenic area gate: tickets, security, shuttle ticket |
| 10:00 | Shuttle up past the Kazakh village |
| 10:45 | Lake shore: walk the near bank, or catch the boat |
| 13:00 | Lunch, packed or in a yurt: milk tea, lamb, bread |
| 14:30 | Cableway, the lakeside trail, or the temple on the east bank |
| 16:30 | Shuttle back to the gate |
| 17:00 to 17:30 | Return coach, reported to depart on time |
| 19:00 to 19:30 | Back in Urumqi |
| Item | Price |
|---|---|
| Season entrance, April to October | About ¥95, or ¥45 in winter |
| Park shuttle, compulsory | About ¥60 return |
| Through-ticket, entrance and shuttle | About ¥155 in season |
| Electric cart, final 800 m | ¥10 |
| Boat across the lake | About ¥100 |
| Cableway to the viewpoint | Reported between ¥120 and ¥220 |
| Return coach from the city | ¥60 to ¥90, depending on the departure point |
A realistic day costs ¥250 per person with the coach and one extra, up to ¥500 with the boat and the cableway. A private car with driver removes the 17:00 deadline, which is the reason to pay for it, so arrange it through the hotel and confirm whether the driver's park entry is included. The lake is about 10°C colder than the city, with fast-moving rain.
Day 3: three options
| Option | Distance and time | Cost | Pick it if |
|---|---|---|---|
| Nanshan pastures | 60 to 75 km south, 1.5 to 2 hours | Entry reported around ¥30, plus food and horse rides | The mountains appeal but a second lake day does not |
| Turpan by high-speed train | About 160 km east, 48 minutes to 1 hour 12 minutes | Second class about ¥49 to ¥51.5 each way | Desert and ruins matter more |
| A second city day | Inside Line 1 and the bus network | Metro fares from ¥2 | After two long days |
Turpan in a day
Trains run to Turpan North station, which is the one to aim for: the older Turpan station sits far outside the city. From Turpan North a local bus reaches the city for a few yuan, and a taxi or shared car costs around ¥30. Jiaohe ruins, the Karez irrigation channels, the Emin Minaret and Grape Valley are worth the time, but not all fit alongside a return train, so pick two. Flaming Mountain lies about 10 km outside the city and is usually covered on the same run.
Normal-speed trains also run the route in 1.5 to 2 hours with hard seats around ¥23.5 to ¥24.5, useful for an early departure or a late return. Both sell out on holidays, so book on the official rail app rather than turning up at the counter.
Where to stay
| Area | Why | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|
| Nanmen and the old centre | Walking distance to the bazaar and the food streets, Line 1 at the door | Busy and loud in the evening |
| Erdaoqiao | Inside the Uyghur quarter, best for evening food | Fewer international-standard rooms |
| Hongshan and Youhao | Convenient for the airport bus and route 51 | Less character, a ride from the sights |
| Nanhu and the government district | Quiet, modern hotels with Line 1 access | Dull at night; dinner is a taxi away |
| Near Urumqi Railway Station | Sensible for an early high-speed departure | Far from everything else in the city |
Urumqi is one Chinese city where the hotel question needs checking: not every property registers foreign guests, and a listing on an international booking site does not guarantee it. A mid-range or international-chain hotel, with written confirmation that foreign passports are accepted, avoids a wasted evening. Expect roughly ¥100 to ¥300 for budget rooms, ¥300 to ¥500 three-star, and from about ¥700 for the top end.
Before you fly
- The museum slot: free, real-name, capped daily, booked on the museum's official WeChat account, closed Mondays.
- Tianchi transport: a coach with a fixed early-afternoon return, or a private car.
- Beijing time: everything with a timetable uses it, while local conversation often runs two hours behind.
- Security: bag scanners at metro stations and major sites, and 1.5 to 2 hours at the airport for a domestic flight, 2.5 to 3 for an international one.
- Payment: verify a foreign Visa or Mastercard inside Alipay or WeChat Pay before travelling, and keep a few hundred yuan in cash for market stalls.
Frequently asked questions
Is three days the right length for Urumqi?
Yes. One day covers the city, one is committed to Tianchi, and the third takes a second mountain day, Turpan or a slower city day.
Do I need to book the Xinjiang Regional Museum in advance?
Yes, and it is free. The visit runs on a real-name timed reservation through the museum's official WeChat account, with passport details as the ID, and daily numbers are capped. In high summer they go days ahead. Closed Mondays.
Where should I stay in Urumqi?
Nanmen or Erdaoqiao if the bazaar and food streets are the priority, since both are walkable and Line 1 is at hand. Nanhu or the Hongshan and Youhao area for quieter hotels. Confirm in writing that the hotel registers foreign guests.
Is Turpan worth a day from Urumqi?
Yes, for anyone drawn to desert history. High-speed trains reach Turpan North in under an hour and a quarter for around ¥49 to ¥51.5 each way, and Jiaohe, the Karez channels and the Emin Minaret fill a day.
What is the time difference in Xinjiang?
There is no official one. The country runs on Beijing time, UTC+8, which is what every timetable shows. Many residents also use an unofficial local time two hours behind, particularly in markets, and nothing is published in it.
Do I need a border permit for Urumqi, Tianchi or Turpan?
No. Those destinations are open with an ordinary Chinese visa or visa-free entry. The Border Management Area Permit applies to frontier zones such as Tashkurgan, the Khunjerab Pass area, Baihaba and parts of the Duku Highway. Foreign visitors apply in person at a county-level exit-entry office, and some are closed to foreign tourists entirely.
How much does three days in Urumqi cost?
Excluding flights and hotels: around ¥100 to ¥250 a day for food and local transport, ¥250 to ¥500 for the Tianchi day depending on extras, and roughly ¥150 to ¥250 for a Turpan day.
Can I pay by card, and is cash needed?
Cards are rarely accepted directly. Bind a foreign Visa or Mastercard to Alipay or WeChat Pay and verify your passport in the app before arrival, since that is how metro, taxis and restaurants are paid for. Carry a few hundred yuan for market stalls.
