The Best Time to Visit Urumqi and Xinjiang

Temperatures, fruit, dust, crowds and the two sweet spots in the calendar · Updated September 2026

Short answer

September is the best month. Days sit in the low twenties, the light is clear, the domestic crowds thin after the school holidays, and the harvest is at its peak. Late May to early June is the other good window: green pastures, comfortable temperatures, no crowds yet.

Urumqi has a real four-season continental climate with roughly a 45-degree spread between January and July. January averages around -14°C, with nights that have hit -30°C; July averages around 26°C, with record highs over 40°C. The air is exceptionally dry all year, which makes summer more bearable than the numbers suggest and winter less so.

Two things to plan around: Chinese public holidays, especially National Day week from 1 to 7 October and Spring Festival, and the spring dust season. The mountains run 8 to 10°C cooler, so the Tianshan is the escape valve in July.

Month by month

Average daily high and low in the city, from 1991 to 2020 records. The Tianshan and Heavenly Lake run 8 to 10°C cooler.

MonthHigh / LowWhat it is like
January-8°C / -16°CDeep cold, dry air, cheapest hotels. Ski season in full swing.
February-5°C / -14°CStill hard winter. Spring Festival crowds and closures.
March6°C / -3°CThaw begins. Grey and slushy in the city, snow still in the mountains.
April17°C / 5°CRapid warm-up. Heavenly Lake ice breaks up mid-month. Dust risk peaks.
May24°C / 11°CExcellent. Green pastures, comfortable city, low crowds.
June29°C / 16°CPeak wildflowers. Daylight to nearly 22:30. Book ahead.
July31°C / 18°CHottest month. Peak domestic season. Go to the mountains.
August30°C / 17°CMelon and grape harvest. Turpan is brutal, go early or skip.
September24°C / 11°CThe best month overall. Warm days, cool nights, harvest food.
October14°C / 3°CCrisp early on. National Day week is packed. Snow by month end.
November2°C / -6°CQuiet and cold. Scenic areas start closing.
December-6°C / -13°CSnow, ski resorts open, lowest city prices of the year.

The swing is the story. January averages -14°C against July's 26°C, and the coldest nights of a normal January reach around -24°C. One bag will not cover both, which is why season choice matters more here than in most Chinese cities.

Spring: April and May

Spring arrives abruptly. April is unsettled, the ice on Heavenly Lake usually breaks up mid-month, and higher trails can be muddy. By early May the Nanshan pastures are green and the city sits in the low twenties.

This is the value window: cheap hotels, small tour groups, and the Tianshan still carrying enough snow to make every photograph. Humidity in April and May sits around 37% to 43%, dry even by Chinese standards.

Spring is dust season Urumqi sits in a basin on the edge of the Junggar desert and spring brings dust and sand-laden winds, with April and May the windiest months of the year at around 10kph average. On a bad day visibility drops and the sky turns yellow-grey. Dust masks help, contact lenses do not, and flights occasionally run late. It is not every day and it is not a reason to avoid the season, but build a spare day into a short trip.

March is the month to skip. Not cold enough to be interesting, not warm enough to be pleasant, and the mountains still hold snow without good access.

Summer: June to August

Summer is Xinjiang's domestic high season: grasslands green, lakes vivid, the whole mountain range open. June is the best of the three, with wildflowers at Sayram and light until nearly 22:30.

July and August are hot, with mid-thirties normal and records above 40°C. The saving grace is the dryness: low humidity makes 33°C feel closer to a European 28°C, and shade actually works.

The exception is Turpan, 180km southeast and 150m below sea level, which routinely passes 45°C in July and August. Visit in May, June, September or October, and sightsee before 10:00 either way.

Autumn: the month to aim for

If you can only come once, come in September. Daytimes settle into the low twenties, nights drop to around 11°C, the light gets long and clean, and the crowds thin after the school holidays. The harvest is in, which matters more here than in most places.

From about 20 September the Altai birch and larch forests turn gold, and Kanas and Hemu have their famous ten days. That window sells out months ahead and is the most competitive booking in Xinjiang.

Early October is still beautiful, but National Day week from 1 to 7 October fills every scenic area in the country. For autumn colour without the crush, aim for the last ten days of September or wait until 8 October.

Winter: cheap, severe, and better than you think

Urumqi winters are severe. The city sits regularly below -15°C and occasionally below -25°C, and an inversion can trap cold, hazy air over the basin for days. December averages only 2.5 hours of sunshine a day.

What you get in return is the lowest prices of the year, no crowds, and the Silk Road and Baiyun ski resorts about 40 minutes from downtown with a season running December to March. Heavenly Lake freezes solid and is spectacular under snow, though boat trips stop and some facilities close.

Come prepared: down jacket, thermal base layers, hat, gloves and boots with grip. Indoor heating is strong and dry, so you will be stripping layers the moment you walk inside.

The fruit season, and why August matters

Xinjiang fruit is not a minor detail, it is why people time their trips. Dry air and a huge day-night temperature swing produce melons and grapes with sugar levels hard to find elsewhere in China.

PeriodWhat is in season
Late June to JulyEarly melons, apricots, cherries
AugustHami melons, grapes, peaches at their peak
SeptemberGrapes, pomegranates, walnuts, apples
OctoberLate grapes, dried fruit and raisins, dates
November to MayDried fruit, nuts and raisins only

The Turpan grape harvest runs roughly July to October, and August is when Hami melons peak. If food is part of why you travel, book August or September.

Public holidays to avoid

Outside these dates Xinjiang is noticeably quieter than eastern China, even in peak summer. The crowds are mostly domestic and cluster in the same two windows.

What to pack, by season

SeasonEssentials
Year roundHigh-factor sunscreen, sunglasses, lip balm, water bottle. The air is exceptionally dry.
Spring and autumnLayers, windproof shell, warm mid-layer for the mountains, dust mask for spring.
SummerLight clothing plus a fleece for Heavenly Lake, sun hat, long sleeves for Turpan.
WinterDown jacket, thermal base layers, insulated boots with grip, hat, gloves.

The most common packing mistake is under-dressing for the mountains. Heavenly Lake is a two-hour drive from a city where it may be 31°C, and the lake can sit at 20°C with wind. A fleece earns its place in the bag in every month.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best month to visit Urumqi?

September. Daytime temperatures sit in the low twenties, the light is clear, domestic crowds thin after the school holidays, and the harvest is at its peak. Late May to early June is the second-best window and the better value of the two.

Is Urumqi too hot in summer?

The city reaches the mid-thirties in July and August, which is hot but dry and manageable. Turpan, 180km away, routinely passes 45°C and is the real problem. Visit Turpan in May, June, September or October, and sightsee early in the day.

How cold does Urumqi get in winter?

January averages around -14°C, with nights that reach about -24°C in a normal year and have dropped to -30°C. December averages about -10°C. It is dry cold rather than damp, but you still need a proper down jacket and insulated boots.

Are there sandstorms in Urumqi?

Spring brings dust and sand-laden winds, with April and May the windiest months. On a bad day visibility drops and flights can be delayed. It is intermittent, but build a spare day into a short spring trip.

When is the fruit season?

Melons and grapes peak in August, and grapes, pomegranates and walnuts carry into September and October. From November to May it is dried fruit and nuts only. If food is a reason you travel, book August or September.

Should I avoid Chinese public holidays?

Yes, if you can. National Day week from 1 to 7 October is the worst, because it lands on the best weather and the Altai autumn colour. Spring Festival is also a national travel surge. Outside those windows Xinjiang is much quieter than eastern China.

Is Heavenly Lake worth visiting in winter?

It freezes solid and is spectacular under snow, but boat trips stop and some facilities close. The trade-off is the lowest prices of the year and no crowds.
