Short answer
Chengdu's sights split into three groups: the panda base ten kilometres north of the centre, the historic core around Wuhou Shrine and Jinli, and the alley-and-teahouse city in between. Only one of them genuinely sells out. The Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding charges around ¥55 for adults, issues dated tickets online in advance, and offers limited walk-up availability in peak season.
The base opens at 07:30 and the pandas feed and move until roughly 09:30. Turn up after 10:00 and you have paid ¥55 for sleeping animals and the day's biggest queue. Wuhou Shrine and Du Fu Thatched Cottage (both around ¥50) are the ticketed historic sites that earn their fee. Jinli, Kuanzhai Alley, People's Park and Taikoo Li cost nothing.
Two days covers the city without rushing. Tickets are tied to your passport number, so carry the original document, and confirm the price on the booking page — Chengdu adjusts prices and booking windows by season.
What needs advance booking and what does not
Most of Chengdu is pay-at-the-gate. The panda base is the exception, and it is the first stop on almost every itinerary, which is why it decides how the rest of the day is shaped.
| Sight | Ticket | Book ahead? | Channel |
|---|---|---|---|
| Giant Panda Breeding Base | Around ¥55 adult, ¥27 half-price | Yes — dated ticket, roughly 7 days ahead | Official WeChat mini program or authorised resale platform |
| Wuhou Shrine | Around ¥50 | Normally no; yes in holiday weeks | On site or official channel |
| Du Fu Thatched Cottage | Around ¥50 adult, ¥25 half-price | Normally no | On site |
| Jinsha Site Museum | Around ¥80 | Normally no | On site |
| Jinli, Kuanzhai Alley, People's Park, Taikoo Li | Free | No | Walk in |
| Metro rides between all of the above | ¥2–8 per trip | No | Turnstile, QR code or transit card |
The panda base, planned properly
The base sits at 1375 Panda Avenue in Chenghua District, about 10 km from the city centre and more than 30 km from Shuangliu airport. Metro Line 3 runs to Panda Avenue station; from Exit A a shuttle bus or bus 198a covers the last stretch.
The metro does not stop at the gate. Budget an extra 15–20 minutes for the transfer, and more on holiday mornings when the queue for the shuttle is longer than the ride. A taxi or Didi from the centre runs roughly ¥50 each way and skips the transfer.
Walking every enclosure takes three to four hours; the paid internal shuttle shortens that. Feeding time is why you come early — pandas eat in the morning and sleep through the middle of the day.
| Site | Location | Getting there | Ticket |
|---|---|---|---|
| Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding | Chenghua District, 10 km north of downtown | Metro Line 3 to Panda Avenue, then shuttle | Around ¥55 |
| Dujiangyan Panda Valley | Dujiangyan, roughly an hour northwest | Intercity train to Dujiangyan, then taxi | Around ¥55; holiday booking needed |
| Bifengxia Panda Base | Ya'an, around 150 km west | Coach or private car, half a day each way | Combined park ticket, roughly ¥95–118 |
Bifengxia is not a Chengdu attraction. It is a two-and-a-half hour transfer each way, and a "Chengdu panda day tour" that lists it is a different trip. See the fuller panda base guide for gate choices and the morning route.
The historic core: Wuhou Shrine, Jinli and Du Fu
Wuhou Shrine honours Zhuge Liang and Liu Bei in one walled compound of halls, bamboo and red walls. It is the most photogenic hour you will spend in Chengdu, and Metro Line 3 reaches it at Gaoshengqiao. Opening hours run roughly 09:00 to 18:00 with ticket sales ending about an hour before closing.
Jinli starts at the shrine's side gate and costs nothing. Come for the architecture and the evening lights, not the food; the snacks are tourist-priced.
Du Fu Thatched Cottage, on the west side, is a garden and museum around the poet's reconstructed home — quiet, green and almost empty on weekdays. Half-price entry applies for students with ID.
Free Chengdu: alleys, parks and teahouses
The city's best hours cost nothing. Kuanzhai Alley is three lanes of courtyard houses and tea rooms; go before 10:00 or after 20:00 and it belongs to locals. People's Park is the classic teahouse stop — bamboo chair, covered cup of jasmine tea, nothing to do — and Taikoo Li with the Chunxi Road area is the modern city. The metro ties it together; the Chengdu metro guide covers fares, lines and QR code setup.
How a good day fits together
| Time | What | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| 07:00 | Breakfast near your hotel | Noodle shops open early; eat before the panda run |
| 07:30–11:00 | Panda base | Feeding first, then the far enclosures as crowds build |
| 12:00 | Lunch | Back near the centre; the base's own food is forgettable |
| 14:00–16:30 | Wuhou Shrine, then Jinli | Shrine first while it is quiet, street after |
| 17:00–18:30 | People's Park teahouse | Cheapest hour of the trip |
| 19:00 | Hotpot | Book or arrive before 18:30; popular rooms fill fast |
A two-day version keeps the panda base on day one and moves Du Fu, Jinsha, Kuanzhai and Taikoo Li to day two. The 2-day Chengdu itinerary lays that out hour by hour, and the day trips page covers Leshan and Dujiangyan.
Common mistakes
- Arriving at the panda base at 10:30. The animals are asleep and you are in the thickest crowd of the day.
- Assuming the metro reaches the gate. Line 3 gets you to Panda Avenue; the base is still a bus ride away.
- Booking a tour without reading the location. Check whether the listing means Chenghua, Dujiangyan or Ya'an.
- Leaving the passport in the hotel. Tickets and some museum entries are tied to your passport number.
- Arriving during Golden Week without bookings. First week of October and the Lunar New Year week fill every ticketed site.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need to book the panda base in advance?
Yes in practice. Tickets are dated and sold online through official channels, with the booking window opening roughly a week ahead. Same-day tickets exist but are not guaranteed in peak season, so book for the date before you travel.
How much is the panda base ticket?
Around ¥55 for a standard adult, about half that for students and children with ID, and free for young children and visitors over 60. Seasonal and policy changes are common, so confirm the current price on the booking page.
What is the best time to visit the panda base?
The first two hours. Gates open at 07:30, pandas feed and move until roughly 09:30, and after 10:00 they mostly sleep. This is also when the base is quietest.
How do I get to the panda base without a car?
Metro Line 3 to Panda Avenue, leave by Exit A, then a shuttle bus or bus 198a to the gate. Taxi or Didi from the centre costs roughly ¥50 and removes the transfer.
Is Jinli free, and does it need a ticket?
Free, no ticket, no booking. It is an open pedestrian street next to Wuhou Shrine and busiest after 19:00 when the lanterns come on.
How much does Wuhou Shrine cost and when does it close?
Around ¥50 for adults, open roughly 09:00 to 18:00 with ticket sales ending about an hour before closing. Public holiday weeks can require online booking — check the official channel.
How many days do I need in Chengdu?
Two days covers the panda base, the Wuhou Shrine and Jinli area, a teahouse and the central alleys. One day works only with a 07:00 panda start and a central afternoon.
