Beijing to Shenzhen by Train (2026): Times, Fares and Booking

1,500 miles from Beijing West to Shenzhen North · daytime high-speed trains, the D-series sleeper, fares and the booking window · Updated September 2026

Short answer

Beijing to Shenzhen high-speed trains run from Beijing West (北京西站) down the Jingguang corridor to Shenzhen North (深圳北站), with a few services using Futian (福田站) instead. The route covers about 2,400 km. The quickest departures take 7 hours 50 minutes to 8 hours 30 minutes; most stop-heavy services take 10 to 11 hours 30 minutes.

This is the corridor where the overnight high-speed sleeper is a standard product. The D-series sleeper between Beijing West and Shenzhen North carries berths lying parallel to the direction of travel, introduced in 2017, and covers the line in about 11 to 12 hours overnight.

Sales open 15 days before departure. One international guide prices the trip at about US$160 second class, US$253 first class and US$497 business class. Book on 12306 with a verified passport and pay through Alipay or WeChat Pay.

Stations at each end

Shenzhen's rail geography matters: one of its stations sits on the Hong Kong border and another does not.

StationChinese nameWhat it is
Beijing West北京西站Departure point for high-speed services on this corridor, west of central Beijing
Shenzhen North深圳北站Main arrival station for the fastest trains, in Longhua north of the centre
Futian福田站Underground station in the central business district, next to the Futian border checkpoint
Hong Kong West Kowloon香港西九龍站Not part of this route, but the obvious onward leg: under an hour further south, with border formalities on arrival

A train ending at Futian is not the same product as one ending at Shenzhen North. Our train station guide shows how the Chinese names appear on tickets.

Booking with a foreign passport

  1. Verify your 12306 account earlyRegistration means uploading a passport photo and a selfie with the passport. Review is manual, and one guide puts it at 3–5 working days.
  2. Work to the 15-day releaseTickets appear 15 days before departure and sell until roughly 30 minutes before the train leaves.
  3. Compare Shenzhen North against FutianBoth appear in search results. If your hotel is downtown, a slightly slower arrival at Futian can save a metro crossing of the city.
  4. Choose between seat and berthOvernight services sell berths only and run on few departures; the fastest daytime trains are a different product at a different price.
  5. Pay in the appAlipay or WeChat Pay inside 12306. Third-party sites take international cards and add a fee of about ¥15–30 per ticket. Our 12306 in English guide covers the screens.

Fares

Fares are set per train and class, and the authoritative figure lives in the 12306 app. One long-established guide lists roughly:

ClassGuide-listed fare
Second classAbout US$160
First classAbout US$253
Business classAbout US$497
Conventional sleeperWell below the high-speed seat fares

Those are third-party figures converted at roughly ¥7 to the dollar; treat them as a ceiling.

On board and at the station

Arrive 45–60 minutes before departure: luggage is screened and passports checked at the entrance, and boarding opens about 20 minutes before the train goes.

On board there is a power socket at every seat, hot water at the car ends, a buffet car on longer services, and overhead racks for a carry-on. Check the luggage rules before packing.

Frequently asked questions

How long is the train from Beijing to Shenzhen?

The fastest high-speed trains take about 7 hours 50 minutes to 8 hours 30 minutes for the 2,400 km. Many departures take 10 to 11 hours 30 minutes because they stop more often, and some use Futian rather than Shenzhen North. The overnight high-speed sleeper takes roughly 11 to 12 hours.

Does the train arrive at Shenzhen North or Futian?

Shenzhen North (深圳北) for most services, with a minority using Futian (福田), which is closer to the city centre and sits next to the Hong Kong border crossing. Check the station on your booking: the two are about 20 minutes apart by metro.

Is there an overnight sleeper from Beijing to Shenzhen?

Yes. The D-series high-speed sleeper between Beijing West and Shenzhen North carries new-type berths that lie parallel to the direction of travel, introduced in 2017. The run is roughly 11 to 12 hours overnight, and sleeper berths are the only class on those trains.

How much does a second-class ticket cost?

One independent international guide lists Beijing to Shenzhen at about US$160 in second class, US$253 in first class and US$497 in business class, roughly 55 percent above the Beijing to Guangzhou stretch. Fares are set per train, so the exact yuan figure appears on 12306 rather than on third-party pages.

Can I book with a foreign passport?

Yes. The 12306 English site and app support foreign passports, and the passport is the document that gets you through the gate. Complete identity verification early because it is reviewed by hand and can take a few working days.

How far in advance can tickets be booked?

China Railway normally opens sales 15 days before departure, and 12306 sells from then until about 30 minutes before the train leaves. This corridor is busy, so on National Day, Spring Festival and summer weekends the faster departures can sell out the day the window opens.

Can I continue to Hong Kong from Shenzhen?

Yes. Trains run from Shenzhen North and Futian to Hong Kong West Kowloon in well under an hour, and Futian station is directly connected to the Futian checkpoint. That leg crosses a border, so it is booked as an international sector with passport control at West Kowloon.
