Guangzhou to Hong Kong by Train (2026): Times, Fares and Booking

142 km, 47 minutes at the fastest, and both border checks inside one building · Updated September 2026

Short answer

High-speed trains connect Guangzhou South (广州南) and Guangzhou East (广州东) with Hong Kong West Kowloon (西九龙). The fastest run takes about 47 minutes, most departures take around an hour, and Guangzhou East services run closer to 1 hour 30. Around 50 pairs a day cover the 142 km.

Both border checks happen at West Kowloon under the co-location arrangement. Southbound, you board like a domestic passenger and clear mainland exit then Hong Kong entry inside the station after arrival.

Book on 12306 or MTR's high-speed rail site in a 15-day window, with your passport as the ticket. Second class is quoted at roughly ¥185–¥215; confirm on the official channel.

The stations, and why the choice matters

Guangzhou has two stations on this corridor, far apart from each other. The name on your ticket decides the taxi ride too.

StationWhere it isWhat it means for you
Guangzhou South 广州南Panyu, south of the centre, metro 2, 7, 22Most departures and the fastest times; both ends outside the city centre
Guangzhou East 广州东Tianhe, downtown, metro 1, 3, 11Slower services over the Guangshen line, short ride from central hotels
Hong Kong West Kowloon 西九龙West Kowloon, minutes from MTR Austin and Kowloon (Airport Express)Every arrival and departure, with both border checks inside

Journey times

TravelChinaGuide puts the distance at about 142 km, with 300 km/h running on the mainland side and 200 km/h through Hong Kong.

PairingTypical timeNotes
Guangzhou South → West Kowloon47 min – 1 h 10The fast option; non-stop services are the ones quoted at 47 minutes
Guangzhou East → West Kowloon1 h 20 – 1 h 55Downtown departure, slower line, more stops
West Kowloon → Guangzhou South47 min – 1 h 20Northbound, from early morning to late evening

Because the trip is under two hours, the gap between a 47-minute train and a 1 hour 10 train is worth less than the distance from your hotel to the station.

Seat classes on this route

G-category trains carry second, first and business class, and on a sub-hour hop the upgrade rarely earns its price. Second class is 3+2 across with power at most seats, first class is 2+2 and quieter, business class is the reclining cabin you pay several times over for.

One exception: two large suitcases are easier to stow in first class. Layouts are in our seat classes guide, and some services use MTR's own trainsets with their own two-class layout.

The border at West Kowloon

West Kowloon is not a conventional Chinese station. The co-location zone puts both sides of the boundary inside the building.

  1. Travelling southBoard normally at Guangzhou South or Guangzhou East after security and the ID check. On arrival at West Kowloon you clear mainland exit, then Hong Kong entry.
  2. Travelling northReversed, and all before boarding: check in, clear Hong Kong exit, cross the boundary line, clear mainland entry, then go down to the platform.
  3. Allow real timeMTR suggests 45 minutes before departure, or 60 for first-timers and families. Check-in and immigration close 30 minutes before departure.
A train ticket is not a visa The ticket changes nothing about entry rules. Mainland China requires whatever visa or visa-free eligibility your nationality has, and Hong Kong applies its own rules to your passport.

Booking, the window, and what you pay

Sales open 15 days before departure and close 30 minutes before the train leaves, per MTR's published guidance for 12306. Cross-border services have their own refund clock: changes and refunds for departures from West Kowloon close 45 minutes before departure, against 30 minutes for mainland departures. The wider ladder is in our refund and change guide.

What published fares look like TravelChinaGuide quotes second class at roughly ¥185–¥215 (about US$27–32), the range covering Guangzhou South against Guangzhou East. First and business class cost noticeably more. Mainland departures are priced by China Railway and West Kowloon departures by MTR, so the figure in the booking channel is the one that counts. For scale on the same corridor, see the Guangzhou–Shenzhen fares table.

On board

Forty-seven minutes leaves no time for on-board logistics: overhead racks, bag space at the carriage ends, power at most seats, and a trolley that may not reach you. Eat before you board, and allow for the immigration hall, which runs longer when two full trains land together.
