Short answer
There is no high-speed train from Guangzhou to Sanya. The direct service is an overnight sleeper that leaves Guangzhou in the late afternoon or evening and reaches Sanya about 16 hours later, after crossing the Qiongzhou Strait on a train ferry. It is the simplest and by far the cheapest way to reach Hainan by rail.
Two patterns exist. The direct sleeper runs through to Sanya without a change. The other option is a Guangzhou to Haikou train plus a high-speed connection on Hainan's ring line, which gives you a daylight arrival and more departure times, at the cost of a transfer between two Haikou stations.
Tickets open 15 days before departure on 12306 and your passport is your ticket. Book the berth first: soft sleeper is the class that sells out on this route, and the direct service runs only a couple of times a day.
Why the train takes 16 hours for a short hop
On a map, Guangzhou to Sanya looks like a morning's journey. By rail it is not, and the reason is the Qiongzhou Strait. No bridge and no tunnel crosses it, so the carriages are split into groups, shunted aboard the Yuehai Railway Ferry, carried roughly 24 km, and reassembled on the Hainan side near Haikou.
Loading and unloading alone takes hours. Add a route that runs west across Guangdong through Zhaoqing, Maoming and Zhanjiang, and sixteen hours is a reasonable result.
| Option | Departs from | Typical total time | A change? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Direct overnight sleeper | Guangzhou station or Guangzhou Baiyun | About 16 hours | None — runs through to Sanya |
| Overnight train to Haikou + ring line to Sanya | Guangzhou, then Haikou East | About 18 hours including the transfer | Yes, in Haikou |
| High-speed to Zhanjiang West + road or ferry onward | Guangzhou South | Long, and the onward leg is not by train | Yes, plus a bus or a ferry |
| Short domestic flight | Guangzhou Baiyun airport | Well under two hours in the air | None |
Times are typical rather than fixed. China Railway revises timetables several times a year and overnight services on this corridor have been retimed and renumbered before. Confirm the current schedule, departure station and train number on the 12306 app or another official ticket channel for your date.
The direct sleeper, step by step
Published route tables list two direct Guangzhou to Sanya sleepers, both Z-prefixed, one leaving around 18:30 and arriving around 10:50 the next morning, the other leaving around 20:20 and arriving early afternoon. Train numbers in current tables are Z504 and Z8006, and both are subject to change.
- Getting to the right stationSleeper trains to Hainan use Guangzhou's conventional stations — Guangzhou station in the city centre, or the newer Guangzhou Baiyun in the north. They do not leave from Guangzhou South, which is the high-speed hub 20 km south of the centre. Check your ticket, then allow roughly an hour between the two.
- Boarding and settling inSecurity screening at the entrance, then a wait in the hall. Boarding usually opens around 20 minutes before departure. Keep your passport with you; it is the ticket.
- The Guangdong runWest through Zhaoqing, Maoming and Zhanjiang. The lower berths fill with luggage and the corridor gets busy at dinner time.
- The strait crossingLate at night the carriages are separated and pushed onto the ferry. Power in the coach is cut, the ship moves, and you wake up on the island. Some passengers sleep straight through it; others stay up to watch.
- Haikou to SanyaAfter reassembly the train continues across the island on the western side, calling at Haikou and on to Sanya. Arrival is mid-morning, which leaves the whole day free.
Classes and indicative fares
The Guangzhou to Sanya sleeper is a Z-category train with four classes. High-speed seats do not exist on this route because no high-speed set crosses the strait.
| Class | What you get | Indicative fare |
|---|---|---|
| Hard seat | An open coach, no berth. Fine for a day trip, poor for a night. | About ¥230 |
| Hard sleeper | Six berths in an open bay, three high each side, with mattress, pillow and duvet. | About ¥430 |
| Soft sleeper | Four berths in a compartment with a door. The usual choice for this route. | About ¥660–680 |
| Deluxe soft sleeper | Two berths in a private compartment, very limited availability. | About ¥1,060–1,180 |
Those numbers come from published route tables and exist to compare classes, not to quote a price. Fares are set by distance and by train, and they rise in peak periods. The layout differences are explained in our seat class guide, and berth-by-berth detail is in the sleeper train guide.
Route 2: connect in Haikou and arrive in daylight
If the 10:50 or early-afternoon arrival of the direct train does not suit, take an overnight train to Haikou and finish on the ring line. Ring line trains cover Haikou to Sanya in 1 hour 15 minutes to 3 hours 30 minutes, with well over a hundred departures a day across the corridor, so the connection is easy once you are in the right place.
- Two Haikou stations. Long-distance trains call at Haikou station; most ring line services leave from Haikou East. A local bus links them in about two hours, and a taxi is far faster. Confirm the arrangement when you arrive rather than trusting an old guide.
- Ring line stations. Haikou East, Meilan at the airport, then Wenchang, Qionghai, Wanning, Shenzhou and Lingshui down the east coast, with Yalongwan, Fenghuang Airport and Sanya at the southern end.
- Separate tickets. The long-distance leg and the ring line leg are two bookings. Both open 15 days ahead, and the sleeper berth is the part that disappears first.
Booking: 15 days, passport, berth first
China Railway releases tickets 15 days before departure on 12306 and at station counters. There is no earlier release, and agents who offer to lock in a berth months ahead are buying it for you the moment the window opens. Account setup and verification are covered in our 12306 in English guide.
| Step | What to do | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Register and verify | Create a 12306 account with passport details and complete identity verification | Unverified accounts cannot buy tickets |
| Know your station | Check whether the train leaves Guangzhou station, Guangzhou East or Guangzhou Baiyun | Guangzhou South is the wrong station for this route |
| Book the berth on day 15 | Buy soft sleeper if you want the comfortable option | Only a couple of direct services run each day |
| Travel | Carry the passport you booked with | It opens the gate at both ends |
What to expect on board
- Food. A dining car and a trolley service, with limited choice and higher prices than the city. Stock up in Guangzhou before boarding — roast meat and rice from a Cantonese takeaway travels well.
- Hot water. Free boiling water at the end of every coach. A flask and a cup noodle are the standard equipment.
- Power. Sockets in soft sleeper compartments and sometimes in the corridor. Shared, and occasionally dead. Carry a power bank.
- Luggage. Racks above and space under the lower berth. Size and weight limits are enforced at the entrance scanner; see our luggage rules page.
- Comfort. No showers, bring toilet paper, wet wipes, slippers and an eye mask. The upper berth is cheapest and the least convenient.
- Timing. Arrival is mid-morning, so a same-day hotel check-in works. Do not book an onward flight for the arrival morning — a delayed ferry passage moves everything behind it.
- Stations. Chinese stations reuse similar names across cities. The train station guide covers the ones that catch visitors out.
When to fly instead
Guangzhou to Sanya is a short domestic flight, well under two hours in the air, with several departures a day. On time alone it wins comfortably, and off-peak it is often no more expensive than a deluxe soft sleeper berth.
Take the train when the crossing itself is the point, when you are heading for Hainan from elsewhere in the province and want to keep costs down, or when the flights are priced at holiday levels. A middle path that works well: fly to Sanya and take the sleeper back, so you see the ferry once and save a night of travel on the way out.
Frequently asked questions
Is there a high-speed train from Guangzhou to Sanya?
No. The high-speed line ends at the coast and only conventional trains cross the Qiongzhou Strait on the railway ferry. Some booking sites label the overnight sleeper as a high-speed service because it is fast for its class, but the direct train is a Z-category sleeper taking about 16 hours.
How long does the Guangzhou to Sanya train take?
About 16 hours on the direct sleeper, leaving in the late afternoon or evening and arriving mid-morning. Going through Haikou with a ring line connection takes a little longer in total but gives you more departure times and a daylight arrival.
Which Guangzhou station does the train leave from?
A conventional station, not Guangzhou South. Depending on the service that means Guangzhou station in the centre or the newer Guangzhou Baiyun in the north. Check the station printed on your ticket and allow about an hour to cross the city if you arrive on a high-speed train.
Does the sleeper really go onto a ferry?
Yes. The carriages are split into groups and shunted onto the Yuehai Railway Ferry for the roughly 24 km crossing of the Qiongzhou Strait, then reassembled near Haikou. Passengers stay on board, the coach loses power for part of the passage, and the whole operation adds a few hours to the journey.
How much does a berth cost?
Published tables put hard seat at roughly ¥230, hard sleeper around ¥430, soft sleeper around ¥660 to ¥680 and deluxe soft sleeper around ¥1,060 to ¥1,180. Those figures compare classes rather than quote a fare — price your own date in the 12306 app.
Can I buy a ticket with a foreign passport?
Yes. The 12306 website and app have an English interface for foreign passport holders. Finish identity verification on the account before booking, and carry the same passport on the day — it is what opens the gate, and no paper ticket is required.
How far ahead do tickets go on sale?
Fifteen days before departure. That is the complete window on 12306. Agents may take orders earlier, but they are buying on your behalf when the official window opens rather than holding a confirmed berth.
Do I have to change trains in Haikou?
Not on the direct sleeper, which runs through to Sanya. If you connect, remember that long-distance trains use Haikou station and most ring line services leave from Haikou East; a local bus links the two stations in about two hours, and a taxi is much quicker.
Is the train better than flying?
Not on time — the flight is well under two hours. The train is the cheaper option for a night's travel, the only way to cross the strait by rail, and the sensible choice when holiday flights into Sanya are priced out of reach.
Which station should I get off at in Sanya?
Sanya railway station serves the city. Yalongwan station is nearest Yalong Bay, and Fenghuang Airport station is at Sanya Phoenix International Airport. The ring line connects all of them, so pick by hotel location.
