Hong Kong to Macau by Train (2026): Times, Fares and Booking

West Kowloon to the Zhuhai border, seat classes, the 15-day booking window, and an honest comparison with the bridge bus and the ferry · Updated September 2026

Short answer

There is no train from Hong Kong to Macau, because Macau has no mainline railway. The rail version of this trip is Hong Kong West Kowloon to Zhuhai, then a walk across Gongbei Port into Macau.

Most itineraries change once at Guangzhou South, about 47 minutes from West Kowloon, then roughly an hour on to Zhuhai. A few direct services run West Kowloon to Zhuhai without the change, and they are the ones to search for.

Worth saying plainly: for this specific crossing the train is usually not the fastest option. The Hong Kong–Zhuhai–Macau Bridge shuttle and the ferries were built for it and take about an hour, from terminals closer to central Hong Kong. Take the train when you want to break the journey in Zhuhai or Guangzhou.

Train, bridge or ferry: the honest comparison

Four ways cross this water. The high-speed rail is the scenic one and the least direct one, and knowing where each option starts saves more time than optimising the train.

OptionLeaves fromTypical journeyBest for
High-speed rail via Guangzhou South Hong Kong West Kowloon About 47 min, then roughly 1 hour Travelling onward in the mainland, or stopping in Guangzhou
Direct high-speed rail Hong Kong West Kowloon Rail time in the 1.5–2.5 hour range depending on the service One-train simplicity, when the departure time suits
Bridge shuttle bus Hong Kong Port, via the HZMB About an hour of driving, plus border formalities at both ends Direct Hong Kong to Macau trips, running around the clock
Ferry Hong Kong ferry terminals on the island and in Kowloon About an hour on the water Arriving straight into Macau with luggage, paying a premium for it

Ferry timetables, shuttle frequency and rail departure times all change, and none of them should be planned from a screenshot. Check the operator's own page for the day you travel.

The starting point: Hong Kong West Kowloon

West Kowloon is Hong Kong's only high-speed rail station, in Kowloon beside the Elements mall and connected to Kowloon station on the MTR. If you are staying on Hong Kong Island, reaching it takes longer than the first leg of the train ride, which is part of why the ferry wins on convenience for many travellers.

The station runs on co-location. You clear Hong Kong exit and mainland entry inside the building before boarding, then step off in Zhuhai as a domestic passenger. Two immigration processes, one building, before you have left Hong Kong.

Allow more time than a normal station Immigration plus security means West Kowloon takes longer to clear than a typical Chinese station. MTR's own guidance is to arrive well ahead of departure, and 45 minutes is a sensible buffer. Gates close before departure, and a train left behind is a ticket problem, not a taxi problem.

Guangzhou South is enormous, and a 20-minute connection there is a gamble rather than a plan. If the direct West Kowloon to Zhuhai trains fit your day, take one and skip the transfer entirely.

There is also a second mainland rail endpoint worth knowing: Hengqin station, on the Zhuhai intercity extension, sits under Hengqin Port, where the Macau LRT continues into Macau. It is the only rail link that physically touches Macau territory. Whether a given train calls there varies, so check the station list in the 12306 app and the LRT's current hours before relying on it.

First classAll high-speed and intercity services2+2 layout, wider seats and more legroom, quieter carriages.
Business classG trains that offer it1+2 layout, near-flat recline, the highest fare on the train.
StandingSome busy departuresA seatless ticket. On a cross-border train with immigration on both sides, it is rarely worth it.

The differences in practice — seat letters, luggage space, power sockets — are set out in our train seat classes guide.

Sleepers on this route: no

There is no sleeper from Hong Kong to Macau, and no overnight train that ends near the Macau border. The only sleeper services from West Kowloon are long-haul overnight trains on the Beijing and Shanghai corridors — useful as a hotel-free way to reach the mainland interior, irrelevant to a crossing that takes a few hours.

If a sleeper is part of your plan, our sleeper train guide covers the difference between hard and soft berths and which trains actually carry them.

Booking with a foreign passport

Tickets go on sale 15 days before departure. For trains leaving West Kowloon, sales on 12306 stay open until about 30 minutes before departure, so a same-day plan is possible when seats remain — though not on public holiday weekends.

  1. Verify your passport in 12306 firstWest Kowloon departures can be booked on 12306, through MTR's High Speed Rail channels, or through authorised agents. Verification is the step that stalls people, so do it days before travel.
  2. Search West Kowloon to Zhuhai for direct servicesIf nothing suits, search West Kowloon to Guangzhou South and Guangzhou South to Zhuhai separately — that usually reveals more departures than the through search.
  3. Book on the release dateFifteen days out. Friday evenings, Sundays and the days around Chinese public holidays fill first.
  4. Leave 45 minutes in Guangzhou SouthThe station is large and the walk between platforms is long. A tight connection is how a three-hour trip becomes a five-hour one.
  5. Carry the passport you booked withThe ticket is tied to that document number, and West Kowloon and Zhuhai both check it.

The app walkthrough is in 12306 in English, and the general booking picture, including what agents charge, is in buying train tickets in China.

Clearing the border at Zhuhai

Zhuhai station opens into the Gongbei Port area. The walk from the platform to the immigration hall takes five to fifteen minutes depending on how much luggage you are moving, and the hall itself is signed in English, Chinese and Portuguese.

Foreigners use a designated lane. On a weekday morning this is usually quick; on the first day of a Chinese public holiday it is not.

Published port hours do not agree One listing gives Gongbei as roughly 07:00 to 24:00; another gives about 06:00 to 01:00 the following day. Qingmao, the newer crossing nearby, is described as 24 hours but is built around automated e-channel clearance, which not every foreign passport holder can use. Confirm the hours at the port rather than trusting a travel blog, especially for a late arrival.

Macau immigration sometimes asks where you are staying. Keep an offline copy of your hotel confirmation, and keep your Hong Kong and mainland entry documents together — this is a real international border, crossed three times on a single day trip.

What to expect on board

Modern Chinese high-speed trains, comfortably appointed and not luxurious. Assigned seats with a letter and number, overhead racks, larger luggage space at the carriage ends, and power sockets at seats on the G trains. The Guangzhou to Zhuhai intercity leg is an ordinary commuter-style service with the same basic layout.

Boarding gates close a few minutes before departure. On a cross-border departure from West Kowloon the practical effect is that you are through immigration well before that, so the realistic rule is: clear immigration first, then find coffee. Luggage limits are in our train luggage rules page, and if a connection fails, the change and refund windows are in train refunds and changes.

When not to take the train

If Macau is the destination and Hong Kong is the origin, the bridge shuttle and the ferries are usually the better buy. They exist to solve this crossing, they run from terminals closer to where visitors stay, and they do not involve a second border check at Zhuhai.

The train earns its place in a different itinerary: Hong Kong to Macau with a stop in Zhuhai or Guangzhou, or a one-way trip where you continue north into the mainland afterwards. Booked that way, it is an excellent use of the network. Booked as a simple crossing, it is the slow option with the best views.

Frequently asked questions

Is there a direct train from Hong Kong to Macau?

No. Macau has no mainline railway, so no train reaches it. The rail trip from Hong Kong ends at Zhuhai station, which sits at the edge of Gongbei Port, and the border is crossed on foot. A small number of direct high-speed services run Hong Kong West Kowloon to Zhuhai; most itineraries change once at Guangzhou South.

How long is the train from Hong Kong to Macau?

About 47 minutes from Hong Kong West Kowloon to Guangzhou South, then roughly an hour on the Guangzhou to Zhuhai intercity. With the transfer and the border crossing, door to Macau is usually 3 to 4 hours. Direct West Kowloon to Zhuhai services cut the rail time but run only a few times a day.

Is the train faster than the ferry or the bridge to Macau?

Usually not. For Hong Kong to Macau specifically, the high-speed train means a border formality at West Kowloon, a possible change at Guangzhou South and a second border crossing at Zhuhai. The Hong Kong Zhuhai Macau Bridge shuttle bus and the ferries from Hong Kong are built for this exact crossing and typically take around an hour. The train wins when you want to stop in Zhuhai or Guangzhou on the way.

Where does the Hong Kong to Zhuhai train leave from?

Hong Kong West Kowloon station, in Kowloon next to the Elements mall and connected to Kowloon station on the MTR. It is the only high-speed rail station in Hong Kong and the only place in the territory where immigration for mainland-bound trains happens.

How does immigration work at West Kowloon station?

West Kowloon is a co-location station: you clear Hong Kong exit and mainland entry inside the station before boarding, and you arrive in Zhuhai as a domestic passenger. MTR's own guidance is to arrive well before departure, and a 45-minute buffer is sensible because you pass through two sets of checks plus security. The station is in Hong Kong, so standard Hong Kong entry rules apply to reach it.

Can I book these trains with a foreign passport?

Yes. West Kowloon departures can be bought on 12306 or through MTR's High Speed Rail channels and authorised agents, and foreign passports are accepted. Tickets go on sale 15 days ahead, and for trains departing West Kowloon sales on 12306 close about 30 minutes before departure. Register and verify your passport before the trip.

Is there an overnight train from Hong Kong to Macau?

No. The only sleeper services from West Kowloon are long-haul overnight trains on the Beijing and Shanghai corridors, and none of them stop anywhere near the Macau border. This corridor is served by day trains only, and the rail trip is short enough that a sleeper would make no sense.

Which seat class should I book from Hong Kong to Zhuhai?

Second class is enough for a journey measured in hours rather than days. First class adds a 2+2 layout and more legroom, and business class adds a 1+2 layout and near-flat recline on the G trains that offer it. On the intercity leg between Guangzhou South and Zhuhai, expect second class and first class.

How long does the border take at Zhuhai?

Allow 30 to 60 minutes from leaving Zhuhai station to standing in Macau on a normal day, and more at weekends, during Chinese public holidays and on Macau holiday weekends. Foreigners use a separate lane at Gongbei, which can be either faster or slower than the resident lanes. Published opening hours for Gongbei itself differ between sources, so confirm them before a late arrival.

What if the high-speed trains are full on my date?

Check Guangzhou South connections rather than only direct services, because the Guangzhou to Zhuhai intercity runs frequently. The other options for this crossing, the Hong Kong Zhuhai Macau Bridge shuttle bus and the Hong Kong to Macau ferries, operate independent timetables and are not affected by rail sell-outs. Check current sailings or shuttle timings the day before.
