Short answer
Direct high-speed trains cover Shanghai to Shenzhen in about 6.5 to 8 hours. Most travellers pair Shanghai Hongqiao (上海虹桥) with Shenzhen North (深圳北), about 17 trains a day each way.
The decision that changes your day is which station. Hongqiao is Shanghai's high-speed terminal, on the west side of the city. Shenzhen North sits in Longhua, 30–40 minutes by metro from the Futian business district. Futian (福田) is underground in the centre and faces Hong Kong.
An overnight sleeper can turn the trip into a night's sleep instead of a lost day, but sleeper services here move with the timetable: check 12306 for your date. The window is 15 days and your passport is the ticket.
Which stations you actually use
Both cities spread trains over several stations, and the names are not interchangeable. Read the Chinese characters: 北 north, 南 south, 东 east.
| Station | Where it is | What it serves |
|---|---|---|
| Shanghai Hongqiao 上海虹桥 | West of the centre, linked to the airport, metro 2, 10, 17 | Almost every high-speed departure |
| Shanghai South 上海南 | South side of the city, metro lines 1, 3, 15 | Conventional and overnight trains |
| Shenzhen North 深圳北 | Longhua, north of the centre, metro lines 4, 5, 6 | Main high-speed terminus for this route |
| Futian 福田 | Underground in the Futian CBD, metro lines 1, 2, 3, 4, 11 | Cross-border trains to Hong Kong West Kowloon |
| Shenzhen 深圳 (Luohu) | Downtown, by the Luohu border crossing, metro line 1 | Conventional trains and the Guangzhou intercity |
How long the trip takes
The coastal high-speed line runs roughly 1,400 km, and the direct G trains cover it in 6.5 to 8 hours. Trip.com's route page listed the fastest service at 6 hours 35 minutes.
The gap between the fastest and slowest departure on the same day is over an hour: some trains call at a dozen intermediate cities and some at four.
Seat classes on this route
G-category trains carry three seated classes, and sleepers appear only on the separate overnight services. Layouts, power and on-board facilities are set out in our guide to China train seat classes.
| Class | Layout | What it buys you |
|---|---|---|
| Second class | 3+2 across | The cheapest seat, an airline-economy feel, power at most seats |
| First class | 2+2 across | Wider seats, a quieter carriage, more room for a large bag |
| Business class | 1+2 or 1+1 | Reclining seats, a calmer cabin, several times the fare |
Over seven hours of coast, first class is the upgrade people regret skipping.
Is an overnight sleeper an option?
Sometimes, and it depends on the timetable in force when you travel. Sleeper services between Shanghai and the Pearl River Delta have been added, cut back and rerouted as the network was rebuilt, so a train number on a secondary website is probably stale.
The overnight service that runs dependably on this corridor is the Shanghai to Hong Kong West Kowloon high-speed sleeper, roughly 11 hours, covered in our Shanghai–Hong Kong route page. It shares much of the line south of Xiamen.
Booking, the window and the passport
Tickets go on sale 15 days before departure and stay on sale until 30 minutes before the train leaves, per MTR's published 12306 guidance. That is short by European standards and the commonest planning mistake on this route.
- Register on 12306 before your tripPassport verification can finish in minutes or take up to a week, and the passport is the ticket at the gate. Do it at home; a station ticket window is the fallback.
- Book on day 15, not day 5Long-haul routes sell out early. If the train you want is full, 12306 offers a waitlist request rather than an outright no.
- Know the refund ladder before payingFees rise as departure approaches, steepest inside 24 hours. The current ladder is in our refund and change guide.
On board and at the station
Boarding closes before departure and both terminals are large: budget 30 to 45 minutes at Hongqiao for security, the ID check and the walk to the platform.
- Power, food and luggage. Sockets at or under most seats, hot water and larger bag storage at the carriage ends, and a dining car on most long-distance G trains. Weight limits are in our luggage rules page.
Frequently asked questions
How long is the train from Shanghai to Shenzhen?
Direct high-speed trains take about 6.5 to 8 hours from Shanghai Hongqiao to Shenzhen North, down the coast via Hangzhou and Xiamen. The fastest published time is near 6 hours 35 minutes.
How much is a ticket from Shanghai to Shenzhen?
China Railway sets the fare and 12306 shows the authoritative figure at checkout. Third-party sellers quoted second class from around US$46 in late 2026, a rough scale rather than a price.
Which station in Shanghai do the Shenzhen trains leave from?
Nearly all high-speed services leave from Shanghai Hongqiao, west of the city, on metro lines 2, 10 and 17. Shanghai South handles conventional and overnight trains.
Which station in Shenzhen is best?
Shenzhen North (深圳北) takes most high-speed arrivals and sits in Longhua on metro lines 4, 5 and 6. Futian (福田) is underground in the CBD and serves the cross-border trains to Hong Kong. Luohu handles conventional trains.
Is there an overnight sleeper from Shanghai to Shenzhen?
Sleeper services on this corridor change with the timetable, so search 12306 with a sleeper filter for your date. The overnight option that runs reliably here is the Shanghai to Hong Kong West Kowloon sleeper.
How far in advance can I book a China train ticket?
Sales open 15 days before departure and stay open until 30 minutes before the train leaves. That short window is why this route sells out on popular dates, and peak seasons shift it.
Can I book and board with a foreign passport?
Yes. The 12306 app and the English 12306 website accept foreign passports, and the passport is your ticket at the gate. Verify it before your trip, since verification can take up to a week.
Is flying faster than the train from Shanghai to Shenzhen?
The flight is about two and a half hours against six to eight by rail, plus airport transfers and check-in at both ends. High-speed rail runs city centre to city centre, so compare door-to-door times.
