Shenzhen to Hong Kong by Train (2026): Times, Fares and Booking

Fourteen minutes from Futian, dozens of departures a day, and both border checks inside one building · Updated September 2026

Short answer

Futian (福田) to Hong Kong West Kowloon takes about 14 minutes. From Shenzhen North (深圳北) it is roughly 18 to 20 minutes. Dozens of services run daily, from before 07:00 until around 23:00.

You board like any domestic passenger and clear mainland exit, then Hong Kong entry, inside West Kowloon after you get off. No separate land crossing, no bus.

Book on 12306 in the usual 15-day window, passport as ticket, second class well under ¥100. If your date is sold out, the fallback is the MTR East Rail.

Which Shenzhen station to use

Four Shenzhen stations can appear in a Hong Kong search result, and only two are normally worth booking.

StationWhere it isTo West Kowloon
Futian 福田Underground in the Futian CBD, metro 1, 2, 3, 4, 11; walking distance to the Futian port areaAbout 14 minutes, the shortest hop on the line
Shenzhen North 深圳北Longhua district, north of the centre, metro 4, 5, 6About 18–20 minutes, with more departures overall
Shenzhen 深圳 (Luohu)Downtown, by the Luohu border crossing, metro 1Not the rail route: this is where you walk across to Lo Wu

Futian is the one most visitors want: shortest ride, central, walkable from a CBD hotel.

Journey times and frequency

Shenzhen North → West KowloonAbout 18–20 minSome services also call at Futian

West Kowloon → Shenzhen NorthAbout 18–24 minThe most frequent northbound pairing

Published frequency counts disagree: one listing shows 34 Hong Kong to Futian services between about 07:00 and 22:00, another more than 120 daily across all Shenzhen pairings. A missed train usually costs an hour, not a day.

Seat classes

Cross-border G trains carry second, first and business class, and on a fourteen-minute ride almost everyone buys second. Seats are reserved, and standing is not a normal option.

The upgrade earns its price when you continue straight on to a long onward journey, or when the luggage makes extra space worth it. Details are in our seat classes guide.

The border, step by step

  1. Shenzhen to Hong KongBoard at Futian or Shenzhen North after the usual bag scan and ID check. There is no exit immigration before boarding. At West Kowloon you clear mainland exit, then Hong Kong entry.
  2. Hong Kong to ShenzhenReversed, and all before boarding: check in, clear Hong Kong exit, cross the boundary line, clear mainland entry, then descend to the platform. Check-in closes 30 minutes before departure.
Late-evening gaps are the real risk The last cross-border trains leave around 23:00 each way, and the land crossings are not open 24 hours either. Fifteen minutes in the immigration hall is realistic on a quiet morning, much longer when two full trains land together. Baggage limits are in our luggage rules page.

Booking and what you pay

Sales open 15 days before departure and close 30 minutes before the train leaves. Changes and refunds for departures from West Kowloon have a 45-minute deadline rather than the mainland's 30 minutes, because the border sits in the middle of the process.

Rough fare scale A second-class seat costs well under ¥100, and reseller listings cluster around ¥70–¥90 depending on the station pair and direction. Mainland departures are priced by China Railway, West Kowloon departures by MTR, and 12306 shows the official fare. For the adjacent leg, see the Guangzhou–Shenzhen route page.

If the trains are full, or you want a different crossing

The rail crossing is the comfortable one, but not the only one, and the alternatives need no reservation.

Every land crossing has its own opening hours and none is open 24 hours.

That depends on your nationality, and the ticket has no bearing on it. Hong Kong runs its own immigration rules separate from mainland China. Check both before you book.

On this line the passport is the ticket, so the app confirmation is a convenience rather than a document you must produce. Skip the automated gates at Futian and Shenzhen North: the staffed lane is faster for a foreign document. Our 12306 English-language guide covers registration.
