Short answer
Macau has no mainline railway, so no train crosses the border. Every rail route from Shenzhen ends on the mainland side — at Zhuhai station, which sits at the edge of Gongbei Port — and the last few hundred metres are walked.
Two routings do the job. The common one changes once at Guangzhou South: about 30–47 minutes from Shenzhen North, then roughly an hour on the Guangzhou–Zhuhai intercity to Zhuhai station. A small number of direct trains run Shenzhen North to Zhuhai in about 1 hour 50 minutes.
Tickets on 12306 open 15 days ahead and foreign passports are supported. Allow 2.5–3.5 hours from a hotel in Shenzhen to the Macau side, and add the border queue — an hour or more at weekends and during Chinese public holidays.
There is no railway into Macau
This is the single fact that changes what you book. Macau has a light metro inside the territory but no mainline railway, and no train crosses the boundary. China's high-speed network stops at Zhuhai, immediately north of the border, and everyone continues on foot.
So what you are buying is a train to the border plus a border crossing. Geographically the two are neighbours, but only one of them runs to a timetable. The train is the part you can plan; immigration is the part you cannot.
One station on the mainland side deserves a look before you book. Hengqin station, on the Zhuhai intercity extension, sits under Hengqin Port, and the Macau LRT continues from there into the city — the only rail link that physically touches Macau. Whether a given train calls at Hengqin varies, and LRT service hours vary too, so check both in the app and on the operator's own page before building a plan around it.
Which Shenzhen station to leave from
Shenzhen's stations are not interchangeable, and booking the wrong one costs you an hour in a taxi through traffic.
- Shenzhen North (Shenzhenbei / 深圳北) — the high-speed hub, and where nearly every useful departure toward Guangzhou South begins. Metro lines 4, 5 and 6.
- Futian (福田) — a smaller set of high-speed departures on the same corridor, useful if you are staying in the central business district. Metro lines 2, 3 and 11.
- Shenzhen station (Luohu / 深圳站) — the old border station, mainly slower intercity services toward Guangzhou East and Dongguan. Not the fast route to Zhuhai. Metro line 1.
For this route, book from Shenzhen North unless a direct train from Futian suits your hotel better. Station layouts, exit numbering and metro connections are covered in our China train station guide.
The routings that actually work
| Routing | Stations | Typical train time | Changes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Change at Guangzhou South | Shenzhen North → Guangzhou South → Zhuhai | 30–47 min, then roughly 1 hour | 1, in the same station complex |
| Direct service | Shenzhen North → Zhuhai | About 1 h 50 min | 0 |
| Intercity via Guangzhou East | Shenzhen (Luohu) → Guangzhou East → Guangzhou South → Zhuhai | 2 h 30 min and up | 2 |
| Via Hengqin instead of Gongbei | ... → Hengqin station, then Macau LRT | Same rail legs, different last mile | 1 or 2 |
The first two rows are what almost everyone ends up booking. The third exists when the fast services are full. The fourth is worth knowing about if Hengqin Port is quieter on the day you travel.
Journey times you can plan around
Fast G trains on the Shenzhen North to Guangzhou South leg run in as little as about 29–37 minutes, with most departures taking 30–47 minutes. The Guangzhou to Zhuhai intercity leg adds roughly an hour. If you take a direct train, the whole rail trip is about 1 hour 50 minutes.
The buffer between the two legs is where plans go wrong. Guangzhou South is a very large station, and a 15-minute connection is not a connection — it is a hope. Forty-five minutes to an hour between legs is comfortable, and it survives a short delay on the first train.
| Segment | Typical time | Buffer to allow |
|---|---|---|
| Shenzhen North → Guangzhou South | 29–47 min | Arrive at the station 40 min early for security and boarding |
| Transfer inside Guangzhou South | 20–40 min on foot | 45–60 min between trains |
| Guangzhou South → Zhuhai | About 1 hour | — |
| Zhuhai station → Gongbei Port hall | 5–15 min walk | — |
| Border crossing, both sides | 30–60 min typical | 90 min at weekends and holidays |
Seat classes that exist on this route
Two different train families run the corridor, and the class list is not the same on both.
| Class | Where it exists | What it looks like |
|---|---|---|
| Second class | G, D and intercity C services | Five seats across, 3+2 layout, the cheapest and by far the most common choice on a trip this short. |
| First class | G, D and intercity C services | Four seats across, 2+2, wider seats and more legroom. On a 30-minute leg it buys comfort, not speed. |
| Business class | G trains on the high-speed corridor | Three seats across, near-flat recline, lounge access at major stations on some tickets. Priced well above first class. |
| Standing | Sold on some busy departures | A ticket without a seat, standing in the vestibule or corridor. Not worth buying for a leg that is already under an hour. |
Class names, seat letters and what each one includes are set out in more detail in our train seat classes guide.
Is an overnight sleeper an alternative?
No, not for this trip. The corridor is a few hundred kilometres, and it runs high-speed and intercity services through the day rather than sleepers. There is no sleeper to Zhuhai, and no overnight train that ends anywhere near the Macau border.
Sleeper trains in this region run on the long-distance north–south trunks through Guangzhou — the Beijing and Shanghai routes — and they are useful for reaching Guangdong overnight, not for the final hop to Macau. If that is what you are looking for, see our sleeper train guide for the classes and how the berths work.
Booking: the 15-day window and a foreign passport
Tickets go on sale 15 days before departure and stay on sale until about 30 minutes before the train leaves. That window is short by international standards, and it is the reason popular weekend departures vanish in hours rather than days.
Foreign passports are fully supported on 12306, the China Railway app. The practical steps:
- Register and verify your passport before you flyIdentity verification is not always instant. Doing it at home takes minutes; doing it on station wifi the night before a trip does not.
- Search the exact station pairShenzhen North to Zhuhai if you want to see direct services, or Shenzhen North to Guangzhou South plus Guangzhou South to Zhuhai if you want the full choice. Searching city to city can hide the connection options.
- Book the 15-day release dateTickets open 15 days out. Set a reminder for the release morning if you are travelling on a Friday, a Sunday or during a Chinese holiday period.
- Keep the transfer gap honestChoose a second leg that leaves at least 45 minutes after the first arrives unless you know Guangzhou South well.
- Travel on the passport you booked withThe ticket is tied to the passport number. A different document, even a second passport, will not open the gate.
The English-language walkthrough of the app is in our 12306 in English guide, and the wider booking picture, including agency fees, is in buying train tickets in China.
The border crossing at Zhuhai
Zhuhai station opens straight into the Gongbei Port area. You walk out of the station, follow the crowd toward the immigration hall, clear mainland exit, walk across, and clear Macau entry. The whole thing is on foot and signed in English and Portuguese as well as Chinese.
Foreigners use a designated lane at Gongbei, separate from the lanes for mainland and Macau residents. On quiet mornings it is quick. On the first day of a public holiday it can be an hour of shuffling.
Two things to carry on this leg: your passport, obviously, and your onward booking. Macau immigration sometimes asks where you are staying, and a printed or offline confirmation is faster than scrolling through email on roaming.
What to expect on board
These are ordinary modern Chinese trains, not a premium experience. Expect assigned seats with a letter and number, overhead racks plus larger luggage space at the carriage ends, and power sockets at seats on the G trains. No catering trolley is guaranteed on a 30-minute hop, and most passengers carry their own water.
Boarding gates close a few minutes before departure, and the train will leave without you. Be at the gate rather than in a coffee queue. Luggage limits and what is not allowed on board are in our train luggage rules page.
If a plan goes wrong — a missed connection, a train cancelled by weather — the change and refund mechanics matter more than the timetable did. Our train refunds and changes guide covers the windows and the fees.
When rail is not the answer
For Shenzhen to Macau specifically, the train is usually the cheapest comfortable option but not always the quickest door to door, because of the Guangzhou transfer and the border queue.
The ferry from Shekou in Shenzhen to Macau is the main non-rail route and skips the land border entirely. Schedules and operators change with the season, so check the current sailings rather than an old timetable. Whichever way you cross, keep your entry documents and any visa paperwork consistent with the way you entered the mainland — the Macau border is a genuine international crossing, not an internal one.
Frequently asked questions
Is there a train station in Macau?
No. Macau has no mainline railway, and no train crosses the border. Every rail trip from Shenzhen ends on the mainland side at Zhuhai station, which sits at the edge of Gongbei Port, and travellers walk the last stretch into Macau. Macau has a light metro inside the territory, and its Hengqin line connects to Hengqin Port on the mainland side.
How long does Shenzhen to Macau take by train?
Rail time is about 1 hour 50 minutes on the few direct trains from Shenzhen North to Zhuhai, or roughly 1 hour 30 minutes to 1 hour 50 minutes of train time when changing at Guangzhou South. Add the transfer buffer and the border crossing and the door-to-Macau total is usually 2.5 to 3.5 hours.
Do I have to change trains in Guangzhou?
On most departures, yes. The usual itinerary is Shenzhen North to Guangzhou South, then a Guangzhou to Zhuhai intercity service. A small number of direct trains run the whole way from Shenzhen North to Zhuhai; filter for direct services in the 12306 app if you want to avoid the change.
Which Shenzhen station should I leave from?
Shenzhen North is the high-speed hub and the departure point for almost every useful service toward Guangzhou South and Zhuhai. Futian has a smaller number of high-speed departures on the same corridor. Shenzhen station at Luohu mainly serves slower intercity services toward Guangzhou East and is not the fast route to Macau.
Can I book these tickets with a foreign passport?
Yes. The 12306 app and website accept foreign passports, and the ticket is tied to the passport number rather than a paper coupon. Register and complete identity verification before your trip, because verification is not always instant. Tickets go on sale 15 days before departure and sales run until about 30 minutes before the train leaves.
How much does the Shenzhen to Macau train cost?
Expect a two-figure fare in yuan per leg for second class, with first class and business class costing more. Exact fares differ by train type, station pair and class, and they change, so the only number worth trusting is the one shown for your date in the 12306 app. Third-party pages routinely quote converted or rounded figures.
Is there an overnight sleeper from Shenzhen to Macau?
No. This corridor is short and busy, and it runs high-speed and intercity trains through the day rather than sleepers. Overnight sleepers in this part of China run on long-distance routes such as the Beijing to Guangzhou and Shanghai to Guangzhou lines, which pass through Guangzhou and do not serve the Macau border. Anyone selling you a sleeper to Zhuhai is selling something else.
What are the opening hours of Gongbei Port?
Published hours for Gongbei Port disagree between sources, ranging from roughly 07:00 to 24:00 in one listing to about 06:00 to 01:00 the next day in another. The neighbouring Qingmao crossing is widely described as 24 hours but is built around automated e-channel clearance, which not every foreign passport holder can use. Treat the port's own notice on the day as authoritative.
How long does it take to cross the border at Zhuhai?
Allow 30 to 60 minutes for the walk, immigration and the Macau side on a normal day, and considerably longer at weekends, during Chinese public holidays and on Macau race or holiday weekends. Foreigners use a separate lane from mainland and Macau residents, which is sometimes faster and sometimes not.
What happens if the trains are sold out?
Check a nearby departure or a different station pair before giving up, because the corridor runs many services a day and seats release in waves. The fallbacks are the ferry from Shekou in Shenzhen to Macau and coach services, and both are worth checking the evening before rather than on the morning of travel. Refund and change rules are covered in our train refunds guide.
