Short answer
Huangshan is not a list of separate monuments. It is one ridge with a handful of places people build a day around. Bright Summit is the panorama and the sunrise platform. Shixin Peak is the pines. The Guest-Greeting Pine is the photograph everyone came for. The West Sea Grand Canyon is the walking. The hot spring is what you do afterwards, and it is the one of the five with an asterisk on it.
They sit in a rough line across the mountain, which is why one day covers all of them if you ride the Yungu cable car up the back side and the Yuping cable car down the front. Walking the whole set without the cable cars turns a seven-hour day into a two-day trip.
Entry is ¥190 in peak season and ¥150 in winter, and covers every sight here except the cable cars, the West Sea funicular and the hot spring. Book by real name through the official Huangshan Tourism mini program, or an English-language platform that accepts foreign passports.
The five in one table
| Sight | What it is | Time needed | Where |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bright Summit (Guangming Ding) | 1,860 m platform, 360-degree views | 45-60 min, or an hour at sunrise | Centre of the ridge, walkable from most summit hotels |
| Shixin Peak (Beginning to Believe) | Cluster of ancient pines on a short spur | About 1 hour | Back mountain, near the Yungu cable car top |
| Guest-Greeting Pine (Yingkesong) | Ancient pine on a granite cliff, symbol of Anhui | 30-45 min with the queue | Yuping area, above the Yuping cable car top |
| West Sea Grand Canyon | Cliffside walk, two descending loops | 2.5-4 hours | West side of the ridge, from Paiyun Pavilion |
| Hot spring (Wenquan) | 42°C spring at the base, one of the mountain's wonders | 2-3 hours | Taohuaxi section, 25 min walk from the south gate |
Bright Summit: the panorama
At 1,860 metres, Bright Summit is the second-highest point on the mountain and the only one you reach without a climb. It sits near the middle of the ridge, which makes it the standard sunrise and sunset spot: Guangmingding Shanzhuang is a one or two minute walk from the platform, Baiyun Hotel 10 to 15 minutes.
The platform is a full circle, so it works in any direction that gives you a view. On a clear evening the ridges stack up westward toward the West Sea. On a cloud-inversion morning you stand above a white floor with peaks poking through, which is the image the mountain is famous for.
It is also exposed. Wind here is stronger than anywhere else on the ridge and the temperature runs 8 to 10°C below the valley. Sunrise moves from around 05:00 in midsummer to 07:00 in midwinter.
Shixin Peak: the pines
The Chinese saying is that without Shixin Peak there is no Huangshan pine. Shixin means beginning to believe, from a Ming-era writer who climbed up and changed his mind about whether any mountain could be better.
It sits close to the Yungu cable car's upper station, the first real stop on the standard route up the back mountain. Black Tiger Pine and a dozen named trees grow out of bare rock at angles that look staged and are not. An hour covers the spur, and it reads well in fog, which matters when the long views have gone.
Nearby in the North Sea area, Monkey Watching the Sea is a boulder that from the right angle looks like a crouching monkey above the cloud.
The Guest-Greeting Pine: the photograph
The tree grows out of a granite cliff face above Yuping Pavilion, with two main branches extending outward several metres to one side, in the shape of an arm raised in welcome. It is around a thousand years old by most published accounts, it is the official symbol of Anhui Province, and it has had a dedicated guardian since 1981, currently the 19th holder of the post.
The tree takes five minutes, the queue does not. The platform fills by mid-morning in peak season and the wait can pass an hour, so arriving before 08:00 is the difference between a photo and a shuffle. It sits at the top of the Yuping cable car, where most people finish the ridge and start down. Flying-over Rock, a 12-metre boulder balanced near the ridge, is about an hour's walk north.
West Sea Grand Canyon: the walking
The best single stretch of walking on Huangshan, and the part people remember. It is a deep cleft on the western side of the ridge, walked on stairways cut into cliff faces and a suspended plank path. The path is one way, so there is no reversing once you commit.
| Detail | What to know |
|---|---|
| Length | About 2.5 km of descent on the loops, 90 to 120 minutes |
| Entry cost | Included in the mountain ticket |
| Funicular out | ¥100 peak season, ¥80 winter, about 3 minutes from the canyon floor to Tianhai |
| Without the funicular | Roughly three extra hours of climbing out of the valley |
| Winter closure | Closed with the funicular from around 1 December to mid to late March for maintenance |
| Weather closures | Temporary shutdowns for ice, snow or strong wind, sometimes without notice |
It starts from Paiyun Pavilion, a short walk from the Xihai and Paiyunlou hotels and under an hour from Beihai. Cloud-Dispelling Pavilion nearby is the sunset spot for anyone staying on that side, with Danxia Peak for sunrise.
The hot spring: check before you plan around it
The spring sits at around 650 metres on the south foot of Zishi Peak, in the Taohuaxi section, with a main outlet averaging 42.5°C. It is listed as one of the mountain's wonders, and Deng Xiaoping wrote four characters meaning famous spring under heaven there in 1979.
The practical problem is current status. A large redevelopment of the Taohuaxi hot spring area was approved in March 2026, involving about ¥412 million over roughly 36 months, run in phases, covering rebuilt bathhouses, a swimming hall, forest therapy facilities and close to 300 rooms. Work has been progressing through 2026, so the historic pools may not be operating on the day you arrive.
Treat it as a bonus rather than a fixed stop and check the official Huangshan channel first. The alternative is in Tunxi city: Zui Spa, on Huashan Road, lists around ¥238 per adult for its standard area, with fish spa and massage charged separately.
Viewpoints worth knowing
| Viewpoint | Best for | Nearest hotels |
|---|---|---|
| Dawn Pavilion (Lion Peak area) | Sunrise, the eastern view | Beihai, Shilin |
| Refreshing Terrace | Sunrise, 5-10 min from the door | Beihai, Shilin |
| Cloud-Dispelling Pavilion | Sunset over the canyon | Xihai, Paiyunlou |
| Danxia Peak | Sunrise and sunset, western side | Xihai |
Sea of clouds is most likely around weather transitions, when an inversion traps cloud below the ridge line. Late spring and autumn give the best odds; cloud cover above 80% usually means fog and nothing else.
The two peaks on rotation
Huangshan's two highest summits, Lotus Peak at 1,864 m and Tiandu Peak at 1,829 m, alternate between open and closed on a rotation system running since 1987, with one closed for ecological restoration while the other is open. This is why older guides contradict each other, and why the safe approach is the official platform rather than a blog post.
Tiandu Peak is the steeper of the two, with the narrow rock ridge known as the Carp's Back, and it needs a same-day quota reservation on top of the entry ticket, released through the official platform, with offline reservation at the gates for visitors without WeChat. Both peaks run roughly April to November and close for winter. Neither is part of the standard one-day ridge route, and adding one costs two to four hours.
Getting between the sights
The lower stations are not interchangeable. Yungu and Yuping both start near Tangkou at the south gate but finish at opposite ends of the ridge. Taiping starts at the north gate, an hour away by road. Donghai, opened in June 2026, serves the new East Gate.
| Cable car | Connects | One way | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Yungu | Yungu Temple to Bai'e Ridge | ¥80 peak, ¥65 winter | Back mountain, about 8 minutes, gentlest approach |
| Yuping | Ciguang Pavilion to Yupinglou | ¥90 peak, ¥75 winter | Front mountain, drops you at the Guest-Greeting Pine |
| Taiping | Songgu Nunnery to Pine Forest Peak | ¥80 peak, ¥65 winter | North gate, 11-12 minutes, shortest queues |
| Donghai | East Gate to the East Sea area | ¥100 | 22-30 minutes, no hiking trail, cable car is the only way in or out |
| West Sea funicular | Canyon floor to Tianhai | ¥100 peak, ¥80 winter | About 3 minutes, inside the canyon |
The park shuttle from the Tangkou transfer centre to a cable car station is ¥19 each way. Private cars are not allowed above the transfer centres.
Frequently asked questions
Can I see all five sights in one day?
The four mountain sights, yes, by cable car up the back and down the front: Shixin Peak, Beihai, the West Sea Grand Canyon, Bright Summit, then the Guest-Greeting Pine on the way down. About 12 km and 6 to 7 hours. The hot spring is at the base and needs a separate afternoon.
Is the hot spring open?
Uncertain. The Taohuaxi area is inside a phased redevelopment approved in March 2026, running about 36 months, with work under way through the year. Check the official Huangshan channel. Zui Spa in Tunxi, around ¥238, is the alternative.
Which is better, Bright Summit or Dawn Pavilion for sunrise?
Bright Summit for the widest panorama and easy access from the Baiyun and Guangmingding hotels. Dawn Pavilion and Refreshing Terrace for anyone in the North Sea cluster, a five to fifteen minute walk away. All fill in the dark, so arrive early with a headlamp.
Is the West Sea Grand Canyon worth the time?
It is the best walking on the mountain, so yes, unless you are visiting between December and mid-March when it is closed. Take the funicular out for ¥100 rather than climbing back up, which saves roughly three hours. It is one way, and the path cannot be reversed.
Why is one of the high peaks always closed?
Lotus Peak and Tiandu Peak alternate on a conservation rotation begun in 1987, with the closed one left for vegetation recovery. Which is open changes every few years, both close for winter, and Tiandu also needs a same-day quota slot.
How close can I get to the Guest-Greeting Pine?
The tree is fenced off with a viewing platform in front, watched around the clock and inspected by forestry and engineering specialists. You photograph it from the platform, and the queue is shortest before 08:00.
What is the East Gate and is it useful?
It opened in June 2026 at Tanjiaqiao, east of the mountain, served by the 6,638-metre Donghai cable car at ¥100 one way. There is no hiking trail between the gate and the mountain, so the cable car is the only way in or out.
What do I need to book in advance?
The entry ticket, by real name, a day ahead at minimum and weeks ahead for April, May, September and October. Cable car tickets share the same system. A summit hotel needs four to six weeks in peak season.
