Short answer
Two days on Huangshan means two nights, and they are not the same kind of night. The first is in Tangkou, the town at the south gate, so the next morning starts at the shuttle bus rather than at a railway station. The second is on the summit, which is the only realistic way to be standing at a viewpoint when the sun comes up.
The route goes up the back mountain on the Yungu cable car and down the front on the Yuping one. That covers Shixin Peak, Beihai, the West Sea Grand Canyon, Bright Summit and the Guest-Greeting Pine without repeating the ridge.
Budget roughly ¥190 entry in peak season, ¥170 for the two cable cars, ¥100 for the canyon funicular and ¥38 for the shuttles, before the hotel. Summit beds run ¥150-400 per person in a dormitory and ¥900 and up for a private room. Book the entry ticket and the summit night first, because the rest of the plan depends on both.

What to book before anything else
- The scenic area ticket. Real-name reservation through the Huangshan Tourism Official Platform mini program, at least a day ahead and weeks ahead for April, May, September and October. Foreign passports work as the ID document. Trip.com sells the same ticket in English with international cards.
- The summit bed. Six hotels sit on the mountain and nothing else is legal. Both sell out four to six weeks ahead in peak season. See where to stay for Huangshan.
- The train. Shanghai Hongqiao to Huangshan North is 2.5 to 3 hours for
¥180-210in second class. Arrive by mid-afternoon. Train tickets in China are sold by passport number. - Payment. Alipay and WeChat Pay cover the shuttle, the cable car and summit noodles. Set both up before you fly. See paying in China with a foreign card.
Night one: Tangkou
Tangkou is a staging post, not a destination. It sits at the south gate, five minutes from the transfer centre, with guesthouses from ¥150 to ¥500, convenience stores at normal prices and restaurants that will cook you a proper meal the night before a long walk.
Two things happen here. You buy water, nuts and instant noodles at town prices rather than summit prices, where a bottle of water is ¥10-15 and a bowl of noodles ¥40-60. And you pack only what you can carry up stone steps, leaving the rest at the guesthouse or the transfer centre luggage counter.
Day 1: up the back mountain
- Transfer centre, first busesThe park shuttle runs to Yungu Temple every 15 to 20 minutes from around 06:30,
¥19one way. On holidays the first departures matter more than anything else in the plan. - Yungu cable car
¥80peak season,¥65winter, about 8 minutes to Bai'e Ridge. The gentler side, with scenery from the moment you step off. - Shixin Peak and Black Tiger PineA compact cluster of ancient pines on a short spur, about an hour with photo stops.
- Beihai and Monkey Watching the SeaThe North Sea area, with Refreshing Terrace and the rock that looks, from the right angle, like a crouching monkey above the cloud.
- Paiyun Pavilion and the West Sea Grand CanyonTwo descending loops on cliffside paths, 2.5 km downhill, 90 to 120 minutes. One way, so there is no turning back once you start.
- The funicular out
¥100from the canyon floor to Tianhai, about 3 minutes, saving roughly three hours of climbing. Canyon entry is included in the mountain ticket. - Bright Summit for sunset1,860 m, a 360-degree platform, the widest panorama on the ridge, and a short walk from the summit hotels.
If the canyon is closed for winter maintenance, roughly 1 December to mid to late March, skip steps five and six and walk the ridge directly from Beihai to Bright Summit. That still leaves a full day of walking.
Night two: the summit
The six summit hotels are grouped in three clusters. Beihai and Shilin sit in the North Sea, closest to Refreshing Terrace and the Yungu cable car. Xihai sits by the West Sea and Cloud-Dispelling Pavilion, good for sunset. Baiyun, Guangmingding Shanzhuang and Yupinglou are spread along the southern half, with Guangmingding Shanzhuang a one or two minute walk from the main sunrise platform.
Rooms are simple and priced for altitude: every mattress and bottle of water arrives on someone's back, and hot water usually comes in a fixed evening window. Checkout is early, often before sunrise.
Day 2: sunrise, front mountain, down
Sunrise times move through the year, from around 05:00 in midsummer to 07:00 in midwinter, and summit hotels post the exact time daily. Bright Summit and Dawn Pavilion are the two reliable viewpoints, with Refreshing Terrace the shorter walk from the North Sea hotels.
After breakfast the route turns south and downhill. Flying-over Rock is an easy detour about a kilometre northwest of Bright Summit. Aoyu Peak and the Hundred-Step Ladder come next, then the Guest-Greeting Pine at Yuping, the tree that appears on the provincial symbol and has a dedicated guardian. The platform queues form by mid-morning.
From Yuping the cable car drops to Ciguang Pavilion for ¥90, and the shuttle returns to Tangkou for ¥19. Last departures fall around 17:00 to 17:40, and once they stop the only way off is on foot in the dark.
What it costs
| Item | Peak season | Winter |
|---|---|---|
| Scenic area entry | ¥190 | ¥150 |
| Yungu cable car, one way | ¥80 | ¥65 |
| Yuping cable car, one way | ¥90 | ¥75 |
| West Sea funicular, one way | ¥100 | Closed in winter |
| Park shuttle, each way | ¥19 | ¥19 |
| Huangshan North to Tangkou shuttle | About ¥30 | About ¥30 |
| Tangkou guesthouse, double | ¥150-500 | ¥150-500 |
| Summit dormitory bed, per person | ¥150-400 | Lower end of the range |
| Summit private room | ¥900-2,500 | ¥900-1,300 |
For one person with a dormitory bed that is about ¥700-800 across the two days, before trains and food. A private summit room pushes it past ¥1,500. Entry is valid for three days from first use, which is what makes a summit night work on a single ticket.
If the weather turns
Cloud cover above 80% usually means fog and no long views, which is when the pine areas at Shixin and Beihai earn their reputation. Thunderstorms pause the cable cars; summit hotels are used to them. If the canyon is closed, the ridge from Beihai to Bright Summit still fills a day. A single day gives the weather one chance to ruin the trip, and two days gives it two.
Frequently asked questions
Do I really need two nights?
One in Tangkou and one on the summit is what works. A summit night after an afternoon arrival means no canyon; a Tangkou night alone means no sunrise.
Which cable car goes up and which comes down?
Yungu up the back mountain, Yuping down the front. The back side is gentler and the scenery arrives early rather than after hours of stairs. Both lower stations are near Tangkou, so the two sides are entrances to one ridge.
Is the West Sea funicular worth ¥100?
Yes if you are walking the canyon. It replaces roughly three hours of climbing out of a deep valley on tired legs.
Can I do this itinerary without staying on the summit?
You can walk it, but you lose sunrise and add a long day. The first shuttles and cable cars do not reach the ridge before first light, so sunrise effectively requires a summit bed.
How fit do I need to be?
Average fitness is enough with the cable cars: six to seven hours of stone steps on day one, four to five on day two, no technical climbing. Hiking up from the valley instead takes three to four hours on the back side and five to six on the front.
What should I carry up?
A small pack, a windproof shell, a headlamp for sunrise, a power bank, and snacks bought in Tangkou. Refillable bottles work: there are hot water points along the trails and kettles in summit rooms.
Where can I soak after the walk?
The hot spring area at the base, in the Taohuaxi section near Ciguang Pavilion, is inside a phased redevelopment project approved in 2026, so the historic pools may not be operating when you visit. Check the official Huangshan channel. The alternative is Zui Spa in Tunxi, around ¥238 per adult.
What about Tiandu Peak and Lotus Peak?
Huangshan rotates its two highest summits, closing one while the other is open, so the answer changes year to year and older guides contradict each other. Tiandu Peak also needs a same-day quota reservation on top of the entry ticket, released through the official platform, with offline reservation at the gates for visitors without WeChat.
