Kunming is the capital of Yunnan and the city most trips to the province start from. It sits at roughly 1,900 metres on a plateau, which gives it the mild year-round climate behind its nickname, the Spring City — daytime highs rarely pass 30°C even in July. Two full days covers the city and the Stone Forest; one day is enough if Yunnan is only a stopover. It is a working provincial capital rather than a museum, and its sights are spread out.
What to see in Kunming
- Stone Forest (Shilin) — most sources give ¥130 for adults. One source describes ¥100 as an off-peak winter rate from December to February. The in-park electric cart is around ¥25 and effectively required. Ticketing is real-name, so book with your passport in advance. A UNESCO karst landscape about 90-120km east; a full day.
- Green Lake Park — free entry. From November to March thousands of red-billed gulls arrive from Siberia and locals feed them from the bridges. Metro Line 5, Cuihu or Huashan West Road.
- Western Hills and the Dragon Gate — the park is free to enter. You pay for the Dragon Gate area and the rides: tickets there are quoted at ¥30, ¥40 and ¥25 across sources, the chairlift at ¥25 one way, and a combined ticket at ¥75-90. Metro Line 3 to Xishan Park.
- Dianchi Lake and Haigeng Dam — free to walk. The promenade along the lake's northern shore, where black-headed gulls winter from November to March. Metro Line 5, Haigeng Dam.
- The Golden Temple (Jindian) — admission disputed by source. A Ming-dynasty hall cast in bronze on Mingfeng Mountain northeast of the centre. Several travel sources give ¥25, while one attraction directory lists ¥80 peak and ¥40 off season.
Best time to go
March to May and October to November. At roughly 1,900 metres the temperature barely moves over the year: the annual average is around 15°C, January averages about 8-10°C with daytime highs near 14-15°C, and July and August average around 19-21°C. The trade-off is the daily range — from November to February the gap between the afternoon high and the pre-dawn low can reach 12-15°C. The rainy season runs roughly May or June through September, mostly as afternoon bursts; November to April is sunny and almost rainless.
Getting there
Most visitors arrive at Kunming Changshui Airport (KMG), about 25km northeast of downtown. Metro Line 6 is the default choice: roughly 20-30 minutes into the city for about ¥5-6, trains every 8-15 minutes, terminating at East Bus Station where you change to Line 3 for the centre. Airport shuttles are quoted at around ¥25 and take 45-60 minutes; a taxi or DiDi runs roughly ¥80-120. Plan around the metro's closing time, quoted at around 22:55 from the airport.
How many days
One day is enough for a stopover: Green Lake, the old core around the Jinma Biji Archways and one good Yunnan meal. Two days is the practical minimum, because the Stone Forest eats a full day once you count the transfers. Three days adds the Western Hills and Dianchi Lake, and four to five is where Yunnan begins.
Before you book, the China trip cost breakdown shows what a day in Yunnan costs, the China packing list covers what a 1,900-metre plateau needs, and eSIM options for China sort out data before you land.
