Macau is not mainland China. It is a Special Administrative Region with its own immigration and currency, so a Chinese visa neither gets you in nor is used up when you cross out. Most Western passports arrive visa free: US and Canadian 30 days, EU, Japanese and South Korean 90, UK 180. The currency is the Macau pataca, pegged to the Hong Kong dollar at about 1.03, and Hong Kong dollars are accepted almost everywhere at 1:1, which costs you roughly 3%.
The territory is 33 square kilometres, and the casinos are a small part of it. The rest is a UNESCO World Heritage centre of Portuguese colonial streets over Cantonese neighbourhoods, plus two quieter islands to the south. Two days covers Macau properly, one day is enough for a Hong Kong day trip, and Zhuhai is walkable across the border for a mainland contrast in the same day.
What to see
Almost all of Macau's headline sights are free. Only two are worth budgeting for.
- Ruins of St. Paul's — the 25.5-metre granite facade of a Jesuit church built 1602–1640. Free at any hour; the crypt museum runs 09:00–18:00, closing 14:00 Tuesdays.
- Senado Square — the Portuguese stone plaza at the old town's centre. Free, open around the clock.
- A-Ma Temple — the oldest sight here, from 1488, and an active place of worship. Free.
- Macau Museum and Mount Fortress — MOP 15 adult, MOP 8 child, free Tuesdays and the 15th monthly, closed Mondays; fortress grounds free daily 07:00–19:00.
- Macau Tower — observation decks MOP 208 adult and MOP 138 child or senior.
- Taipa Village, Coloane and the Cotai resorts — free to walk; Coloane holds Lord Stow's Bakery and the Hac Sa and Cheoc Van beaches.
Best time to go
Mid-October to early December is the window: 27°C in October falling to 17°C in December, the rain gone and the skies clear, with early November the sweet spot. Avoid 1–7 October, when Golden Week pushes daily visitors past 200,000, and typhoon season, May to December and worst July to September, when signal 8 stops ferries, can close the HZMB bridge and cancels flights.
Buildings have no central heating, so a 15°C January day feels colder indoors. See our China packing list.
Getting there
Macau has three ways in, and they are not interchangeable.
- HZMB shuttle bus — the Golden Bus runs Hong Kong Port to Macau Port in Cotai, 24 hours, 40 to 45 minutes on the bridge and 2 to 3 hours door to door, about HK$65.
- Ferry from Hong Kong — about 60 minutes at sea and roughly MOP 190–200 economy; Outer Harbour is nearest the historic centre, Taipa near Cotai.
- On foot from Zhuhai — cross at Gongbei (06:00–01:00) or Hengqin (24 hours), free, with passport control on both sides.
- By air — Macau International (MFM) is on Taipa; a taxi to the peninsula is MOP 55–80, the LRT MOP 6–12.
Free resort shuttles serve both ferry terminals, the airport, Macau Port and the Border Gate, and anyone can board. Buses are MOP 6 in coins, or MOP 3 with a Macau Pass. Get data before you cross: compare eSIM options for China.
How many days you need
- 1 day — Senado Square, the Ruins, A-Ma Temple and one Macanese meal.
- 2 days — add Taipa Village, Coloane, Macau Tower and an evening on Cotai.
- 3 days — add Guia Fortress, the Macau Museum and a slow morning in the old lanes.
Distances are 15-minute bus rides. For daily spending, see what a China trip costs.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need a Chinese visa to enter Macau?
No. Macau has its own immigration, separate from mainland China, and a Chinese visa has nothing to do with it. US and Canadian passports get 30 days visa free, EU, Japanese and South Korean 90, UK 180.
Is the ferry or the bridge better from Hong Kong?
The bridge: about HK$65 against roughly MOP 190–200 for an economy ferry, and it runs 24 hours. The ferry is quicker door to door if you start from Sheung Wan or Tsim Sha Tsui.
What currency does Macau use?
The Macau pataca (MOP). Hong Kong dollars are taken almost everywhere at 1:1 against a peg of about 1.03, so you lose roughly 3%. Buses are exact fare only, MOP 6.
Is Macau worth visiting if I do not gamble?
Yes. The casinos are a small part of a 33 square kilometre territory; the draw is the UNESCO historic centre, the Portuguese-Cantonese food and the lanes of Taipa and Coloane.
When is typhoon season, and what happens if one hits?
The season runs May to December, worst July to September. At signal 8 or above ferries stop, the HZMB bridge can close and flights are cancelled.
Can I see Macau as a day trip from Hong Kong?
Yes, if you focus: morning ferry or HZMB bus, the historic centre from A-Ma Temple to the Ruins, then Macau Tower before the last crossing. Budget two to three hours each way.
