Qingdao Travel Guide

Beer, beaches and German-era architecture on the Yellow Sea.

Why Qingdao

Qingdao is a beer city on a peninsula, and the beer is not a marketing angle — it shaped the place. Germany leased Jiaozhou Bay in 1898, laid out the old town with red-roofed villas and founded the brewery in 1903; that brewhouse still works and is open on Dengzhou Road. The sea is on three sides, so the city is cooler than inland Shandong and the beaches sit inside the metro network.

It is not an ancient capital: for classical gardens see Suzhou, for the modern economy see Shenzhen. Give Qingdao two or three days.

What to see (and what it costs)

Most of the best sights are on the coast and free. Two are worth reserving ahead, and scenic areas check the booking name against your passport.

Zhanqiao Pier is the postcard: a stone walkway to Huilan Pavilion, free, above Line 3 at Qingdao Railway Station. Zhongshan Road runs uphill to St Michael's Cathedral, 15 minutes on foot. Badaguan is eight streets of villa walls and sea views.

The Tsingtao Beer Museum sits on the site of the original 1903 brewery: allow two to three hours, and do not arrive in the last hour. Outside its gates, beer halls line Dengzhou Road, best after dark. The city beaches are free — No.1 at Huiquan Bay is the big central one, No.2 at Taipingjiao is quieter.

Best time to go

Mid-May to mid-June, and the second half of September into mid-October: mild days, mostly dry, crowds well below the summer peak.

July and August are the beach months — warmest sea at 26–27°C in August, plus the beer festival — but also the most expensive, foggiest and wettest weeks of the year. Winter is the reverse: quiet, cheap, and a cold sea wind. Avoid the first week of October and the start of May.

Getting there

Qingdao has one commercial airport, Jiaodong International (TAO), well outside the urban core. Metro Line 8 runs to Qingdao North for around ¥7 — an hour and more door to door — where you transfer to Lines 1 or 3. The last trains are around 22:00, so a late landing means a taxi.

How many days do you need?

Two days is enough for the Old Town, a beach afternoon, the Beer Museum and May Fourth Square at sunset. Three adds Laoshan, which wants a whole day and a 07:30 start. Swimming is separate: the designated beaches open for the summer, the sea peaks at 26–27°C, and July to September can bring green tide and jellyfish, so swim between the flags.

Before you go

Qingdao's summer premium is real — July and August rates are the highest of the year and the shoulder seasons are the value play; the China trip cost breakdown shows what a coastal stop adds per day. Pack for a cold sea wind with the China packing list, and sort out data before you land: the metro, DiDi and ticket bookings here all run through a phone (see the China eSIM guide).
