Short answer
Sanya has no metro. There is no subway here, and anyone selling a "Sanya metro card" is selling nothing. What exists is a single tram line — about 8.4km, 15 stops, ¥3 a ride, downtown to Sanya Railway Station — plus a dense bus network and the fast backbone: the Hainan ring high-speed railway.
The city is a long coastal strip, so distance is the real problem: Dadonghai to Yalong Bay is a drive, not a stroll.
Payment is the second thing to sort. Buses take the QR code in Alipay or WeChat Pay; small vehicles still take cash with exact change. Set both apps up before you land.
Your options at a glance
| Mode | Where it works | Rough cost | How you pay |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tram | Downtown core to Sanya Railway Station, 15 stops over about 8.4km | ¥3 per ride | QR scan or exact-change cash |
| City bus | Whole urban area, plus tourist routes toward the bays | A few yuan; long tour lines cost more | Alipay or WeChat QR scan, or cash |
| Ring high-speed rail | Airport, Sanya station and island-wide stops | Distance-based, modest | 12306 booking with your passport |
| Ride-hailing, shared bike, hotel shuttle | Anywhere with a road; the last kilometre; resort areas | Fixed quote; coins per half hour; shuttle often free | In-app with international cards; Chinese app for bikes |
The tram: the one rail-based city line
Built under a public-private partnership, the tram is the closest thing Sanya has to a metro in the urban core: 15 stations over roughly 8.4km linking downtown Jianguo Road with Sanya Railway Station. At ¥3 a ride it is the cheapest way to cover that stretch and it avoids the station taxi queue.
Buses: the workhorse, and how to pay
The bus network is what actually moves the city, including numbered routes out to the far bays and tourist lines added for high season. Two payment routes work for a foreign visitor: the transport QR code inside Alipay or WeChat Pay, and cash with exact change on smaller vehicles.
A local Hainan transit card exists for residents and some readers are built around Chinese identity checks, so do not count on those. Arrive with the payment app working and a few yuan in small notes. An open mapping app is the reliable way to know when to get off.
Getting to the bays: what beats what
Each bay has its own character, price level and traffic pattern, and the distances decide your day.
| Destination | Best option | Reality check |
|---|---|---|
| Dadonghai | Tram or city bus from downtown, otherwise taxi | Closest resort beach to the urban core; walkable once you are there. |
| Yalong Bay | Ring railway or taxi; airport bus on arrival | Far enough that a daily taxi habit gets expensive. |
| Haitang Bay | Taxi or ride-hailing, or a resort shuttle | Furthest resort bay from the centre. No quick bus back at midnight. |
| Wuzhizhou Island and Nanshan | Taxi or tour transfer, then ferry; or a taxi booked for the day | The boat and the road are the timing risks. Check ferry times on the official channel. |
The airport and the ring railway
Sanya Phoenix International Airport sits west of the city, and the ring railway has a station there — the fastest route to Sanya station if your hotel is downtown or north. For a resort bay, the airport shuttle bus or a taxi is usually simpler than a rail trip plus a transfer. Reported taxi time to Yalong Bay is 40 to 60 minutes at a reported ¥80–100, so get an app quote before you reach the rank. More detail is in the airport transfer guide.
The Hainan ring high-speed railway loops the island, and inside Sanya it works as the fast line: the airport, Sanya station and the coastal stop serving Yalong Bay. Book through the official 12306 channel. Tickets are real-name, tied to your passport, and typically open a couple of weeks before departure. Your passport is your ticket at the station: use the manual gate if the automation rejects a foreign document, and arrive 20 minutes early the first time.
Taxis, ride-hailing and the last kilometre
Metered taxis are plentiful around hotels, the airport and the bays. Ride-hailing through DiDi is the cleaner option: the price is fixed before you accept, the destination is in writing, and international cards work. Drivers often call on arrival, so use the in-app chat and set a meeting point with a visible landmark rather than a beach name.
Shared bikes handle the last kilometre inside a bay. They need a real-name account set up before you travel, and some beach entrances are no-parking zones.
Mistakes that cost visitors a day
- Booking a hotel in one bay and planning days in another. Transfers of 30 to 60 minutes each way add up.
- Setting up payment apps on the bus. The scan needs a funded wallet and often a data connection.
- Leaving the airport without a price. Get a ride-hailing quote or agree the meter before getting in.
- Carrying only a phone. Keep a few hundred yuan in small notes — a dead battery is solvable only with cash.

Frequently asked questions
Does Sanya have a metro?
No. Sanya has no subway or metro system. Its rail-based transit is a single tram line, and the fast backbone is the Hainan ring high-speed railway.
How do I pay for a Sanya bus as a foreign visitor?
The QR code in Alipay or WeChat Pay, scanned from the app's transport section. Small buses still take cash and exact change helps. Local transit cards need Chinese identity details, so arrive with the payment app working.
How much is the Sanya tram?
The published fare is ¥3 per ride, on a line of about 8.4 kilometres with 15 stations from downtown Jianguo Road to Sanya Railway Station. Confirm fare and hours on the official channel.
Is the high-speed railway useful for getting around Sanya?
Yes, for the airport connection and the coast. The Hainan ring line calls at the airport, Sanya station and other island stops, and beats the coastal road on longer hops.
How long does it take to get from Sanya Phoenix Airport to Yalong Bay?
By road, roughly 40 to 60 minutes depending on traffic, with a reported taxi range of around ¥80 to ¥100. The airport bus and the ring railway cost less.
Can I use DiDi in Sanya?
Yes. DiDi covers Sanya well, accepts international cards, and fixes the price before you accept, which removes the negotiation. Drivers may call on arrival, so use the in-app chat if you cannot take a call.
Are shared bikes worth using in Sanya?
For the last kilometre inside a bay area or along the promenade, yes. They run through Chinese apps needing a real-name account, so set that up in advance. Some beach entrances have no parking zone.
What is the biggest transport mistake visitors make in Sanya?
Treating the city as compact. Sanya is a long strip of bays, and a hotel in one bay can be a 30 to 60-minute drive from the beach you came for. Pick your bay, or budget for daily taxi costs.
