Why Suzhou
Suzhou is the one city on the classic China route where the headline sight is a private garden rather than a palace. Nine walled scholar's gardens share a single UNESCO listing, and the canals that fed them still run past Pingjiang Road and Shantang Street. It is 30 minutes from Shanghai by high-speed rail, so it works as a day trip or a two-night stop.
It is not a beach city or a business hub — for those see Qingdao or Shenzhen.

What to see (and what it costs)
Four sights carry the city — the Humble Administrator's Garden, the Lion Grove, the Lingering Garden and Tiger Hill. The expensive season runs April, May, July, August, September and October.
| Sight | Ticket | Time needed | Booking |
|---|---|---|---|
| Humble Administrator's Garden (拙政园) | ¥80 high, ¥70 low | 90–120 min | Real-name timed slot |
| Lion Grove Garden (狮子林) | ¥40 high, ¥30 low | 40–60 min | Gate usually fine |
| Lingering Garden (留园) | ¥55 high, ¥45 low | 60–90 min | Gate usually fine |
| Suzhou Museum | Free | 60–120 min | Timed; closed Mondays |
| Tiger Hill (虎丘) | Priced by season | 90–120 min | Gate usually fine |
See one garden properly rather than four badly: the Humble Administrator's is the largest and most representative, the Lion Grove is a rock maze children will not leave, and the Lingering Garden is the architecture one. The Suzhou Museum is free but timed, and its booking program does not always accept a passport — if it will not complete, turn up with the passport and ask.
Best time to go
Late March to April, and mid-October to late November: 19–24°C days, dry walking weather, gardens at full strength. Summer is the one to avoid, with 32°C days in July and August and a June–July plum rain that can run over 20 days. Winter is quiet and cheap at 3–12°C, but gardens close around 16:00.
Plan around Spring Festival (16–23 February 2026), Labour Day (1–5 May) and National Day (1–7 October): trains sell out and gardens become queues.
Getting there
Suzhou has no civil airport of its own. The nearest is Sunan Shuofang (WUX) in Wuxi, about 35 km away; the fast route in is to fly to Shanghai Hongqiao and take the train, because the airport and Hongqiao Railway Station sit side by side.
| Route | Mode | Time | Cost |
|---|---|---|---|
| Shanghai Hongqiao → Suzhou Railway Station | G train | 32 min | ¥39 second class |
| WUX (Wuxi) → Suzhou Railway Station | Airport shuttle | 45 min | About ¥50 |
| Shanghai Pudong → Suzhou | Airport coach | About 3 h | About ¥70–100 |
| Suzhou North → Suzhou Railway Station | Metro Line 2 | 26 min | From ¥2 |
Suzhou has four railway stations and they are not interchangeable: Suzhou Railway Station is inside the old city on metro Lines 2 and 4 and is the one most Shanghai trains use, while Suzhou North serves the Beijing–Shanghai high-speed line 10.5 km north. Metro fares start at ¥2.
How many days do you need?
Two days is the realistic minimum: all four headline sights, a canal evening, and slack to eat properly. One day covers the northern garden cluster only. Three days adds Tiger Hill, the Tongli water town (about ¥100 entry) or a Shanghai day trip (21–45 minutes by rail).

Before you go
Garden tickets are a small slice of the budget — see the China trip cost breakdown. Pack for plum rain and a damp winter with the China packing list, and sort out data before you land: the metro, DiDi and Alipay all run on QR codes (see the China eSIM guide).
