Urumqi Travel Guide

Gateway to Xinjiang: Heavenly Lake and the bazaar.

11guidesUpdatedSeptember 2026

Urumqi is Xinjiang's capital, where most trips to the region start: four million people below the Tianshan, 2,500 km from Beijing and 16 km from its own airport.

The city earns two days for the Xinjiang Regional Museum and its Tarim Basin mummies, the International Grand Bazaar and Red Hill. A third goes to Heavenly Lake.

Xinjiang Regional Museum

The Tarim Basin mummies — preserved bodies from the Taklamakan, roughly 3,800 to 4,000 years old — plus Silk Road textiles and murals. Free, but you must reserve a timed slot with your passport number. Closed Mondays.

International Grand Bazaar

A 100,000 square metre complex at Erdaoqiao with an 80-metre minaret, free to walk into. The main hall is a tourist market; the lanes behind it are a working bazaar. Come late afternoon and eat there.

Red Hill Park

Free, a ten-minute climb to a nine-storey pagoda built in 1788, open roughly 07:00 to 22:00. Go at sunset.

Heavenly Lake (Tianchi)

An alpine lake at about 1,910 metres below Bogda Peak (5,445 m), 110 km east near Fukang. A mandatory shuttle covers 20 km of switchbacks; a boat is ¥50–100 and the cable car around ¥220 return. Budget ¥250–350 per person door to door.

Best time to go

September is the best month: low-twenties days, clear light, crowds thinned after the school holidays. Late May to early June is the second window and the better value. July and August are hot and busy, but the Tianshan runs 8 to 10°C cooler; winter is severe and cheapest. Avoid National Day week (1–7 October) and Spring Festival, and note that April and May are dust season. Our China packing list covers the layers this swing demands.

Getting there

Fly. Beijing is 4–4.5 h, Xi'an 3.5 h, Chengdu 3.5–4 h, Kashgar 1.5 h. By rail, Urumqi is the terminus of the Lanzhou–Xinjiang high-speed line: Lanzhou West about 11 h (¥551), Turpan North 51 min to 1h23 (¥33–50).

Airport to city (16 km)CostTime
Airport bus, no transfers¥15 flat20–60 min
Metro Line 1¥6–750–75 min
Metered taxi or DiDi¥30–8020–50 min

There is no metro station under Terminal 4: take the free shuttle train to the older terminal area, then transfer to Line 1. The ¥15 airport bus skips that shuffle. Metro gates do not read foreign bank cards, so an eSIM for China activated before you fly also covers the data DiDi needs.

How many days

Urumqi FAQ

Do I need a permit to visit Urumqi?

No. Urumqi, the museum, the bazaar and Heavenly Lake need no permit; permits apply only to Xinjiang's border zones, and some sensitive areas are closed to foreigners outright.

Can I fly into Urumqi on China's 240-hour visa-free transit?

No. The scheme covers 24 provinces and regions and Xinjiang is not one, so Urumqi is not an eligible port — you need a regular visa or eligible visa-free entry.

How much does Heavenly Lake cost in total?

Budget ¥250–350 per person: entrance with the shuttle around ¥155, cable car about ¥220 return, and ¥50–70 each way by bus.

Will my hotel accept a foreign passport?

Larger hotels and chains almost always register foreign guests with the police; smaller guesthouses often cannot. Use the foreigner-friendly filter before you pay.

How much does a day in Urumqi cost?

Metro ¥2–7, airport taxi ¥30–80, a street meal of kebabs and noodles ¥20–50, a mid-range hotel ¥250–500. Most main sights are free.

What should I expect on the ground?

Routine bag scans at metro entrances, malls and the railway station, plus passport checks. Carry your original passport, and do not photograph police or checkpoints.
