Hainan's beach resort: tropical water and the visa-free island rules.

11guidesUpdatedSeptember 2026

Sanya: four bays, four different holidays

Sanya sits on the southern tip of Hainan Island, about 18 degrees north, and it is China's only beach destination of real size. It is a 30 km strip of coast, and the bays sit 10 to 35 km apart with no metro.

Yalong Bay has the finest sand and the clearest, calmest water, the safest swimming and the five-star resorts, but it is 25 km east of town with almost nothing else around.

Dadonghai is the practical base — in town, walkable to beach, restaurants and shops, with the best-value rooms and the shortest rides to the other bays.

Haitang Bay is the newest and most expensive strip, 34 km from the airport, home to Atlantis, the giant duty-free mall and the Wuzhizhou Island ferry. Surf is rougher and stretches close to swimmers.

Sanya Bay is the longest and cheapest, closest to the airport, with the best sunsets and the weakest water.

Getting there

Sanya Phoenix (SYX) sits on the western edge of the city and there is no metro. The airport is 5 to 10 km from the Sanya Bay strip, 15 km from Dadonghai and downtown, 30 km from Yalong Bay and 34 km from Haitang Bay.

The shuttle bus is the cheap option. Line 1 (¥25) runs through Sanya Bay, downtown and Dadonghai to the Yalong Bay hotels, 18 times a day to the last arrival; Line 2 (¥25) serves Haitang Bay nine times a day, last at 22:00. Taxis meter at ¥11 for 2.5 km then ¥2.4 per km, rising to ¥3.6 past 10 km — roughly ¥25–40 to Sanya Bay, ¥45–65 to Dadonghai, ¥100–130 to Yalong Bay and ¥110–145 to Haitang Bay.

The Hainan ring railway also stops at a station attached to the terminal, entered from the west side of T1, though it does not run to Yalong Bay.

How many days

Four days covers it comfortably: one beach day at Yalong Bay, one at Wuzhizhou Island, one day west to Nanshan and Tianya Haijiao, and one city day with Luhuitou at sunset. Three works if you drop Nanshan or Wuzhizhou.
